My main complaint on my '99 (manual) is that the 1st gear is basically useless. I don't know if it's the gearing or what but it winds up way too fast. I've started just taking off in 2nd and pretty much ignoring it even has a 1st gear.
I don't know much about how gears work, I'm more skilled in cosmetics and electronics.
When I lived near Dallas, 1st gear wasn't all that important. But Hawaii has some serious hills, so 1st comes in handy. But now I have an auto :/ so no matter..

lol my main comaint with the auto is that the first couple gear ratios are too tall. I can go 45-50 if I red line with it in 1st. No reason for 1st to go over 30 IMHO.

That and the TCM sucks pretty bad as far as keeping the truck in its power band. It always shifts ASAP for mileage, which leads to unstoppable gear hunting when driving at mid speeds on uneven terrain.

No the horn is out too. Yea I figured it was the clock spring how much would it cost to replace it and why do they go out?
If you were messing with the steering for any reason, you might have snapped a cable. Aside from that, I don't know. It's a pricey little part...something like $300-400 (not including labor). There is a DIY write up on here for replacing it, but most people choose to take the truck to a shop due to safety concerns with messing with the airbag system.

I need help, pleaseeeeeee, please help me, i am going nuts!!!

Recently a very weird thing has been happening, my Frontier goes into fail safe mode after 6.30 pm till around 8 in the morning when the day starts to heat up, it' as if it limits to 2500 rpm, but only limits when driving, in idle it revs all the way and it idles fine.

The transmission does not get stuck in one gear, it changes normally. But if i put my foot down instead of it to change down in order to accelerate it stays in the same gear and then up shifts when revs hit 2500.

And it only happens after around 6 pm, that's the funny thing.

I did the on-board diagnostics scan and got these error codes, P1168 and P0051.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

a quick search approximates the error codes to a faulty AFR sensor. (they are heated and most likely the heat of the day allows it to operate properly but as the day cools down it malfunctions)

I have changed the AFR sensors and the check engine light is gone.

But the failsafe problem still exists. I recently discovered the car goes into failsafe when the headlights are turned on, turn them off and it works normally. It does not matter at what time of the day, once the headlights are turned on the vehicle goes into failsafe.
Any ideas why? Thanks. (Note: Just installed a new battery but problem still exists)

Obviously something with that circuit is crossing over to another one somewhere. I assume you have begun checking the entire circuit out, using good troubleshooting procedures? This may or may not end up being complicated. You may want to start by looking for some obvious problem, like a worn-through or melted section of wire or a connector. I'd begin at the headlights and work backwards through the engine compartment and then through the firewall and into the passenger compartment. If you don't see anything obvious, there are good circuit troubleshooting tools available, that are probably a good investment...

I had all the wiring and connectors checked, no obvious problems there. Took it to another electrician who said my alternator is bad, it's not putting out enough power. Could that be a possibility?

I hate to tell you this, but troubleshooting electrical problems via internet is probably not going to work very well!! Sorry...

Just ordered a universal replacement oxygen sensor but then realized the on on the vehicle has 5 wires and the replacement has just 4.
Has anyone replaced their oxygen sensor with a universal one? If yes please help with the wire pairing.

Urgent help needed!
My engine is making a knocking noise when i accelerate around 2500 rpm and the performance is very bad, engine sounds like it's under a lot of load. I don't hear the sound if i rev the engine in neutral.
If anyone has had this problem or has any idea whats going on, please reply.

You could have gotten a bad tank of gas, did you fill up recently at a "no name" gas stop?
