Passenger seat rattle - SB NTB05-092: relative to 2007's

So, I posted a thread about a rattling/squeaking passenger seat on my 07 CC with the manual fold flat seat. For 05-06, there was a SB NTB05-092. Went the dealership and got the expected "doesn't apply, no bulletin, no problem" response. After reading up, the problem seemed to be lateral movement of the seatback and some others reported having the fix dealer done on their 07's and fixing it. So, I figured rather than waste another 3 hours of my life at a dealer, I'd just suck it up and try to do it myself.

What I found, is that my '07 seat is different. If you are familiar with the service bulleten, then this will make sense. The bulletin tells you to remove four screws on a cross brace, apply threadlock, and then add four pop rivets. Apparently the problem is mostly likely those bolts coming loose or not being enough bracing.

My 07 seat had an added support tie-bar held in place by four bolts, which made the main cross brace impossible to get to. There was also threadlock already on the main cross brace, and it was wrapped with duct tape presumably to prevent rattling between the U-channel and the tube shape of the cross brace. Awesome. "Hey, what if we wrap some duct tape around it? Will that work? Sure!".

Regardless, I removed the secondary cross brace, and went ahead with following the service bulletin method of rethreadlocking the four bolts and adding the pop rivets. Then rethreadlocked the 2nd cross brace and put it back in.

Haven't had enough road time to tell if it worked, but I thought it was interesting to see that my 07 seat was really different than the seat pictured in the service bulletin.

If it does make my rattle go away, Nissan added a pretty costly fix with that 2nd brace, and the problem still comes up. I work in automotive, and if this is the case that supplier's engineer should be kicked in the nads. Making a mistake is one thing, but implementing a costly fix that doesn't fix, well, that's pretty terrible.

so did this end up helping your seat rattle? my 07 is at the dealer for the timing belt tensioners and i told them about the seat rattle and they said "the trucks do that" which is bullshit since there is a tsb for this. just wondering if this fixed the problem and if i should give them a call and have them sure up the bolts.

cheers

It has so far, but the rattle varied depending upon the angle of the seatback. So I haven't really had enough road time yet to be positive.

I can say, I found that before the fix, putting the seatback in the full upright position stopped the rattle. If the seatback was reclined a little you could push on it and get a squeak / extra play. Putting it straight up stopped it like an on off switch.

Nissan rates the labor time at 1.2 hours, it took me longer because of the seat airbag efforts. Good luck getting a dealer to do that on good faith. Mine didn't even both to drive the truck.

Wasn't the seat rattle problem something to do with the seat belt knocking against the door? Do a search, I think I remember something about it posted before.

Nopes, it was coming from the seat. Sometimes when passenger's don't settle the seatbelt back in place flat, it will rattle. But mine was in the seat for sure.

I had the same problem in my 07 frontier, passenger seat rattled and squeaked periodicaly. I took it in several times and after I managed to replicate the problem to the service guys they ordered a new seat frame. It was replaced but the squeaking came back after a few weeks. I decided to fix it my self. After taking a closer look at the seat I noticed that all the plastic covers were loose and the screws were not tightened, however that was not the problem that caused the seat to squeak. The back rest of the seat moves lateraly while driving and over time starts to emit the annoying sound of metal on metal squeaking. I simply took it apart and placed some rubber between the two parts and then tightened everything back together. It has been a couple of months since the fix, so far so good.

Well, it's been awhile now and I've got quite a bit more time behind the wheel. The past few weeks have been anywhere from 0F to 45F (cold made it worse), so I know the squeak/rattling is definitely gone now.

Woot.

Had this happen on my way home from picking up the truck at the dealers on the first day. I was PO'd to think my Toyota experience was about to restart. Then I figured out the cause. We've been happy and quiet since.

Had the TSB done and still rattles

Hello,

I too have an 07 with the annoying seat rattle problem. I had the 07 TSB done on it and the problem still exists. I contacted the service dept that performed it and they said there was nothing else they could do. So I contacted Nissan Consumer affairs and explained my problem. I am now awaiting a call from the regional director for consumer affairs.

Will keep posted on next steps.
