You can get one fabbed by Pro-Tech in Vancouver, WA. They do nearly 100% of the Logging Crew Trucks in my area. Very stout pieces of aluminum. Friend of mine rolled his on the way out to work in teh Woods Roads and he got stuck there for 6 hrs. Fire Dept said the rack is what prevented him from being crushed in the cab as he rolled down the embankment.

Blah blah, google Pro Tech in Vancouver. :)

I usually get mine made locally for my Chevy's. Just a rack with steel running down the length of the bed sides bolted on the top. Usually we get legs that connect to that and bolt to the bed floor in the back by the tailgate. That would probably be overkill compared to using the utilitrack but it depends what you want to use it for.

That's like saying safety glasses are unnecessary as long as you cut stuff properly.

Accidents happen, and its not just there for your cargo coming through the window. We use our work trucks racks to actually secure cargo, hang our bags from, hang snow chains on, mount fire extinguisher etc etc. You can load the truck down in a hurry and not even have to worry about putting something through the window. We use ours so much, that I dont know what we would do without it They are super useful and potential life savers. Whats wrong with wanting a little added protection?

How many straps are needed to secure a cord of firewood? 400? 500?

I had a ProTech in the past - aluminum models aren't cheap, I paid about $500 a few years back. My work trucks have "BACKRACK" brand, function over form utilitarian. Their website lists a Frontier model as being the same as Dodge Dakota #10314, should be about $200. Easily duplicated for about half that though.

I wish I had a rack when me and some buddies loaded an atv. People got a bit excited and it smashed the back window. I have a tool box now though so it won't happen again. lol.

The bed divider could be used in a pinch but only helps the lower portion of the glass, not really full coverage.

I made a beefy-as-heck stainless headache rack for my truck a while back. I even incorporated a channel across the top and bolted in a section of utilitrac, and welded on a nice CB antenna mount.

Now I've got a camper shell, so I don't need the rack anymore. But nobody on CL seems interested so far.

I mainly used my headache rack to support long items (ladders, sheets of plywood, lengths of steel) up over the cab instead of hanging stuff out the back of the truck. It's especially nice if you have to carry long stuff but you also need to park in a tight spot.

Anybody need a 50-pound stainless headache rack?

Went with a Rack-it 6000 series. Very stout, good looking and practical.

Seems like they can only be had in Norcal and short distances from there. They say that UPS etc won't ship their one piece lumber racks, but maybe they could ship a headache rack.

American made too.

If anyone is still out there looking for a headache rack and perusing through these threads like I was, I bought one from Canadian Tire, Cargomaster Universal Headache Rack. Fits well but you need to drill the bed and is arguably a touch tall, atleast in my opinion. But it was also cheap, $200 Canadian, and looks a bit better than the BackRack ones in my opinion.
