Ever wonder what a cheap replacement chrome bumper from Ebay looks like?

A few years ago, I was backing up and I cut too soon so the corner of my rear bumper got pushed when I hit the lowboy trailer I was parked next to. It wasn't bad enough to affect the fender/paint, but too bent to straighten.
I have been watching prices on Ebay for these aftermarket replacement bumper assemblies. Finally I gave in and ordered one for $229.00, plus state tax, free shipping. It arrived in less than a week. I took it to my local garage to have it installed. It looks great! Except.... for the corner ends. The chrome has that wrinkled look at the bend, and the edges of the bumper are kind of jagged, not smooth and even. I dunno.... I sent photos to the seller to see if this appearance is normal... The garage installed it, and a new trailer hitch for $150.00

Yeahhhhh thats a possibility--- that's an idea, hmm. Thanks! Kinda hoping the response from the big seller on eBay will be more like "OHH NO, that's not right! we will send out a replacement pronto!" lol

I'm guessing it is one of two possibilities...a "B" grade supplier, which is one that legitimately sells imperfect parts (functionally good, but otherwise not good enough to be sold as OEM or OEM-grade), or that is a rejected part and someone went dumpster diving (or otherwise diverted them illegitimately from being destroyed) and it ended up on eBay.

My luck with either hasn't been great. Hope yours is better. The B-grade parts I've bought (though none for the Frontier) either needed a lot of finishing work or if they were finished parts, they did not stand up as well as the OEM parts. Like the chrome would rust and flake off, and this is on vehicles that live in southern California, where OEM-grade chrome parts basically last forever with no maintenance.

Be really careful washing and drying that area or your hands will be like chopped meat. If you go to a car wash where they wipe the truck down warn them of that area. Didn’t you look at it before you had it installed?

yeah, I just never gave that a thought. The box it arrived in wasn't damaged no worries I thought. The seller on eBay has a good reviews, they offer a lot of bumpers and I would guess they sell a lot. I just never considered that the finished product could be this bad. I am waiting for a reply from them. I sent them the same pics I posted here.
Maybe they will make it right... maybe

That looks like someone found a beat up bumper at a junk yard, did some banging and cutting on it to get it back in some sorta spec and then had it re-chromed. If you didn't check it like Clint pointed out and gave it to the shop... maybe the shop swindled you?

Did the ebay seller have a good feedback score with a lot of ratings? Do they have a lot of items in their ebay shop?

These are my concerns and tell me it looks like a reconditioned used bumper. Also that gap seems too wide. Parts are made by machines. If this was made by hand, you would see issues everywhere else too. It doesn't even look as though it were an unfinished handmade item.... Looking more, that chrome finish is textured as well...

Best pic I could find of a new one. This happens to be Amazon:

Here is another I found:

yeah! those blemishes in the chrome are the scratches left from the grinder before they dunked it in the Chrome tank. Either the grind marks were too deep to get covered or the chroming was too thin to cover them up.
The guy doing the grinding must of left work early because he sure didn't smooth any of the edges either. Ugh!

OK , Just moments ago- I heard back from the seller- He asked if I could get the bumper fixed locally and he would extend me a $50.00 return.. I replied saying, did you even look at the photos I sent you? How in the would could I fix this and not need a re-chroming.
I replied and requested total replacement and a check for the labor ($50.00) I paid the garage to install it.
I'll let ya all know what the response is to that....

With the way aftermarket parts quality is today, I don't think you're going to find anything better shipped to your door for for $229+ tax unfortunately.

Well yeah thats something certainly to consider. The price I paid was certainly low compared to what is out there.
But at the same I wonder if others who bought these bumpers didn't complain or didn't have the fit/finish issues...

Another option, that I did to me 05, is to buy some rhino in a can and give it a couple coats with that (with proper prep of course). It'll help with sharp edges and hide a lot of the imperfections and/or make those look like war scars ;)

The rest of the bumper looks pretty good. I would have probably taken a grinder to it, and painting the raw edge before mounting. I actually like the increased gap. The bumper gets easily folded and pushed into the body. Mo gap mo better. There also looks like there is a weld in that area that did not get ground smooth before they chromed it. When you get paid $5 a day in a sweat shop, quality is the last of your concerns.

Well, the seller replied back to my request for replacement. (He originally me offered $50.00 for my troubles) This time he said "due to supply issues" (wait what huh?) he cannot replace the bumper at this time- ,but- is willing to refund my cost for the bumper.... To which I replied, of course, OK... I further inquired that if, in the future I wished to replace this one, can I be assured of better quality. Still not sure if this is just typical of what they sell- and no one complains.... or if it is in fact substandard... Oh well for now, I will live with it. It does look good from the rear. lol Reminds me of that sexist joke about a women looking good walking away? I am terrible at remembering the whole joke- instead just the punch line usually. lol

(Haven't heard back anything yet after the above. No money has yet been credited.)

Thanks to everyone that gave input to this topic!

If they offered a full refund, TAKE IT.
To be blunt this time around - this is the gamble you take with cheap parts, and luckily for you the seller didn't just take your money and run.
Plus, at the end of the day, that bumper looks like &(&#. The edges look like (#&^@$@. The chrome plating looks like )@#@$@&.

Yeah no way I would have installed it. Definitely a bad grind and thin chrome.

But, since you are now getting it for free, I am with Kaliqo on this. After you get the refund, take it off grind things smooth (grinders are cheap at harbor freight), pick up some rhino line and go to town. Granted by this point you may not be saving money.

But I mean if you hate see her go but love to watch her walk away, let stay the way it is.
