I have a 2008 Frontier crew cab V-6, whenever I turn the AC unit or the heating system on I have a very loud noise that comes from under the hood. The AC still blows cold and the heater warms, Its just this loud grinding sound that starts then stops then starts then stops,etc.. It sounds like a loud cranking/clicking that comes and goes reapeatly. Something on the lines of the bearings are going out in something. Im not sure. Does anyone else have any experience with this. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

The compressor is the only thing that cycles like that but it’s not tied to the heat. I had a noise and thought it was the compressor and actually turned out to be the belt tensioner.
A mechanics stethoscope helps pinpoint where it’s originating from.

That grinding/clicking noise is what a mode door actuator would make when the plastic gear inside it starts to strip. There are three of them on the heating and cooling unit under the dash, so perhaps that is what you are hearing? Try cycling through the modes (def, heat) and changing the temperature and switching between fresh and recirc modes to see if it affects the noise. If it does, then it's likely an actuator. Good news is that the actuators are only about $25-35 each. Bad news is the dash has to be removed to replace any of them.
