The idea here is to note the various versions for the TCM that may be out there and if sufficient data, spot trends.

Format:

  • Year
  • 4WD or 2WD
  • Truck build date
  • Issues noted prior to flash/update (shift behavior, noises, etc) - if any
  • TCM version prior to update
  • Date of TCM update
  • TCM version after update
  • Post update observations - anything "fixed"?

Though inspired by recall, this is not specific to an issue or even have to be related to issues. Someone may note how perfect their truck behaves, and if able to gather version data can share it here. Any benefit? Probably not unless some clear trend shows one version better than another through anecdotal or observed data.

Of note: When Nissan service department updates your TCM (software), the part number for that TCM will change. Typically we think of the part number being what you see on the label... though probably also true, they refer to the "part number" in this context to what shows when connected to the vehicle using Consult. Knowing this will help you understand how part numbers can change but no actual physical parts swapped.

Gen2.5 welcome to join in.

Examples of Gen 3 TCM part numbers known to be in service prior to Pawl recall in 2022 (R22**):
4WD: 31039-9BU3A, 9BU2D, 9BU2E, 9BU8A
2WD: 9BU0D, 9BU0E, 9BU1A, 9BU7A

"NEW" TCM part numbers for Gen3 after update (as of 11/1/2022):
4WD: 31039-9BU8B
2WD: 31039-9BU7B

TCM part numbers for Gen2.5:
Older 4WD: 9BU3A
Newer 4WD: 9BT6D (TSB NTB21-073)
Newer 4WD: 9BT8B

Other tidbits, since some seem confused on FB about whether an update was performed... you have to read the tech note in your RO (Repair Order) - or simply ask your advisor. Failing that, you might also see if the labor Op Code is added. This will show if an update performed vs checking for applicability. Such as below underlined, using recall to illustrate.

4WD
Check Software and Reprogram Transmission Control Module (TCM) R22A90
Check Software, Reprogram Not Needed R22A91
2WD
Check Software and Reprogram Transmission Control Module (TCM) R22B10
Check software, Reprogram Not Needed R22B11

  • Date of TCM update: 11/1/2022
  • TCM version after update: 9BU8B

  • Year: 2021

When I check the RO copy I have, it does not include the attached in "page of" count. Implies they provided the info because I asked. Because it is clearly a template, it may be something they all use but has to be asked for. I have seen version info added to RO lines also so it may not be required.

This works for Maineiac TCM info but not for mine and a few others I tried....

You can check to see if updates are available here: Nissan Publications

I suspect that recall updates may not appear here or possibly some delays before it shows as a general update. If I'm right, you can't just "ask" for the recall update to TCM without actually doing the recall. TSB's are apart from Recalls so to my logic this makes some sense.

Within each update download, there will be files to unpack. Thus far, I do not see where "changes" are documented. The purpose of the readme is likely for folder location after download/unpack.

A few posts, and my own experience, is that the time to reprogram varies. My dealer mentioned it has been slow to download lately... in a past life this would make sense - you download or check for one each time you do an update or if time has lapsed. Not checking only to find out later you assumed wrong is a good way to brick parts.

Where my Nissan techs at? Check my work! lol I have email if anyone has files. wink wink

Sharp eyes will notice the TSB search also, though I think subscription is required beyond summary. Most of us have little or no use for this subscription as there are other sources for TSB info.

Edit: I did not discover the page/site though I did stumble into it. Fairly certain its been shared in other threads, but seems relevant to add it here.

The "recall" TCM version 31039-9BU8B (4x4) now shows up as the available update in nissan-techinfo.com for the below numbers. Grains of salt, but may imply the TCM can be flashed to this version without recall labor op (think reflash, tcm module replacement etc).

9BU3A, 9BU2D, 9BU2E, 9BU8A

Because the file that is downloaded does not require a VIN, the further implication for us is that the files are the same and not generated on the fly. Does the "install" process check for an incremental update or just full send the downloaded file? I still do not have the data, but full send is my bet.

Quick question. I just picked up the 2023, when I go to www.nissan-techinfo.com and search the 2023, I don't see a service bulletin for reprogramming the TCM on the 2023. Although I have some shift shock around 1st and 2nd gear when accelerating, mainly when coming to a stop and I do not come to a complete stop. Since the recommendation for reprogramming the Gear Ratio DTCs Stored in the TCM does not come up for the 2023 the way it does for the 2022, does that mean it has been fixed between years?

Has anyone with a 2023 actively had it done a the dealer, or does it not need to be done?

The pawl recall update did not initially show in that portal even though it was available to dealers. Is it possible then there is an available update not yet visible to us? I suppose, but seems doubtful. Depending on the miles you have on it, the recommendation might be to drive more - could sort itself out.

All you really need for that site are the orig TCM#s. This IMO would be more accurate (within that site anyway). Plugging those in will show the vehicle and what if any the new TCM# would be.

That long winded response to say, I don't know. lol.

I just had my pawl fix completed. It took them about five hours to do it. For some reason my Accessorides remote start cable was unplugged afterwards so I had to reconnect that. They also didn't latch the hood the hood completely which I noticed when getting up to speed on the interstate.

As a customer, if you dont ask for ver detail, it might still be in the tech notes for your RO. Better to ask.

TSBs are in several places via web, I see you already have at least one source 😉

It gets even worse if you react to it or input without commitment. If on-off-on-off-on-off-on about all I can suggest is try to anticipate traffic and smooth out throttle inputs. This is likely more noticeable if aggressive.

None of the clunk thump thud buyers have had any volume of failures.

Also, without more detail (version tracking vs behavior/issue) this might be the wrong thread for general complaints or diag
