I love seeing those old diagram drawings. I hope they keep them forever. Interesting that they recommend loading outside the wheelbase though. I've never heard of that.

 

You read it wrong. That isn't a loading zone. It is a measurement. Center of gravity of cargo a distance (L) from the back of the bed. It is easier to measure from the back of the bed than from the front of the bed. Center the cargo over the data point (L) from the back of the bed.

 

I would center the load at a point 6-12 inches in front of rear axle like all goose-neck hitches are.

 

I load all my gear behind the rear axle so I can do wheelies at every stoplight.

I'm kidding.

 

I should look in my 97 hardbody manual and see if it has the same diagram
