That is the exact behavior mine had: it would go down, but would only go up with some pounding/pulling. Eventually, it will stop working in either direction, even if you pull on it.

The parts i got from rock auto didn't say remanufactured, i assumed they were new (i think it was this: More Information for DORMAN 741348).
I went ahead and ordered that same one. It's about $10 cheaper than the one on amazon. I just don't understand how they can sell the regulator and motor combo for cheaper than just the motor alone.

After worrying that I was going to be stopped by a police officer and get shot because I couldn’t lower my windows and that they are too dark, I finally jumped the gun and changed my regulator and motor. I was not sure which one was bad, so I just bought both together here:

Not to mention, using drive throughs... :crikey:

Just came to say thanks for the guide! I bookmarked this link a long time ago knowing I was going to have to replace mine, did it today with no issues. Thanks again!

A huge thank you to the OP. Just replaced the motor and regulator on my Frontier. Only took about an hour and saved me a lot of money.

:goodjob:

You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.

A great write up that was easy to follow.

Two things that I encountered that you might want to note:

1) If you have tinted windows like I do, be careful not to scratch the tint when raising and lowering the window when not attached to the regulator. Even though I thought I was being careful, I managed to get a dozen dings in the tint. :(

2. After taking off the door panel, there is a white foam cover that needs to be removed. I carefully pulled it off the door using a blade to cut through the black foam adhesive. When putting it back on I used a spray adhesive in areas that needed it along the edge.

Ah thank you so much. Every car I've ever had that had auto windows have lost their front driver's side window motors. They just get used the most. Some vehicles, like my '96 Thunderchicken, needed multiple motors replaced.

Also, thank you to the post just above me. I ran into the foam and wasn't sure how to approach it. A sharp knife worked perfectly! I just used the knife in my Gerber, but a razor blade would probably be best. For anyone else having trouble with the foam, you only really need to pull the bottom half up. I taped the bottom half of my foam to the top half and had enough room to work.

It's my turn to visit this thread...

My driver's side auto-down window stuck down this morning, and there is rain in the forecast.

I didn't have a chance to work on it since it happened on my way to work, but went ahead and found this thread. I called the dealer, parts are in stock but OUCH: Motor - $350, Regulator - $135, Switch - $200.

Hoping I can get it to roll up so I have a little more time to play with it.

Go to rockauto.com. I have this same issue with the front driver side. Ordered parts several days ago and got them in 3 days. Haven't had a chance to install it yet but hoping to do it this weekend.

There are a few choices on parts, the main difference being the manufacturer. I think I purchased mine for around $80. Don't know why I didn't go with Dorman for $55. Even with the magneti marelli brand, you're still doing better than dealer prices.

Thanks. It looks like Autozones near me have this instock for a little more than Rock but far far less than the dealer.

I probably need to square it away sooner, so I'm willing to pay $90 instead of $60 plus shipping to have the part in hand sooner.

Ended up replacing the motor. Relatively painless with the help of a buddy. Lubed up the tracks and "caddy" on the regulator. Rolls up like a champ!

Very nice. Used this as help to change out daughters reg and motor which fortunately stuck in up position while I got parts in. Was worried about getting window down, but couple raps on the motor with a wrench got the motor working momentarily to remove the screws from the glass holder.

$55 from amazon.

Changed it out in 30 minutes, thanks to OP.

Daughter just paid $340 at a shop to get this one on her '98 Pathfinder.

Mrs. Cusser had bad regulator on a 2nd-door window on her 2005 Yukon, no one sits there any more, I used two sheet metal screws to hold it up in place.

Just another thanks for posting this guide as I just replaced my regulator/motor in the driver's front door this afternoon. Took about 45 minutes, but would have taken a lot longer if I didn't have the guide to go off of.

Thanks!

On a side note here, when its time to put the white foam back on, you can also use a heat gun on low to heat up/melt the black adhesive on the white foam cover and it will re stick to the metal surface. I did this when I replaced my window motor and it works pretty well. I didn't cut the adhesive off, just slowly pulled the white foam free from the metal door frame and most if not all the adhesive stayed on the white foam surface. To put it back on, I heated up one corner, stuck it in place and slowly worked my way back around the panel. When done, you could not tell it had ever been off/pulled up.

Just ordered mine today from Amazon, new Dorman $52.15. It's already shipped and bs in my hands on Saturday. Sundays project. And maybe some welding on my OE bumper mount spare tire carrier?

Have you installed and tested it yet? I am debating on the Dorman or another version. Some reviewers stated a weak motor, and another stated that the motor/reg is not configured for the auto up/down capability. I would think the latter is in the switch and not the motor though.

I need to order one soon regardless because I am getting tired of beating the door to death!

Dorman seems like an OK brand, although I had to replace their version of the fuel-canister valve twice. They may be OEM spec, but just enough to get by.
