Wondering if the closed design (Volant, Injen etc) is less noisy than the open style (AirRaid, K&N, etc.) Does the increased air flow have any impact at lower revs, like from start to 50 mph (without foot-to-the-floor acceleration)? Had JWT on 350Z and it quieted down at cruising speeds but 'growled' nicely as I ran up through the gears.

I dont know how a cold air intake would be better closed. An Open air box has no restriction except the filter. Idk what the theory is on this but I love my K&N its only loud above 4k rpm its open and I did feel a bit of a diffrence in low end.

Very depends on what your looking for. Open CAI are mainly for Hp, in which you lose some TQ at low end. Closed CAI will help with the TQ at low end, But not much HP.
I'm running a Nismo (AEM) CAI, Before i put my exhaust, I've would of been able to hear the intake @ 2000 Rpms, the sound was like a whistle, Now with the exhaust, it really opens up @ around 4000rpms. I've always been considering in just closing up the top part of the box, and adding a "snorkel-like" tube to the front of the grille to somewhat create a cold air design. Might try it this week.
But IMO, if you really want a nice CAI, Go with Volant, I've heard nothing but good result with them. But than again, There's the Kool Vue intake, that's somewhat of both Open and closed designs. check it out for youself.

Not sure how some figure that an open system lets in hot under hood air. I see this posted here repeatedly. I have an "open" Nismo CAI, but it is form-fitted to the hood so when the hood is closed it makes a seal with the box, making it a "closed" CAI.

NISMO intake is pretty open isnt it? its not completely sealed in theres gaps all over. i was wondering if sealing up those areas would help though

I like mine cause its HUGE! and its got a heat sheild like you were talking about.. keeps the heat from the engine away and draws cooler air from the fender.. and its funny because from about 1k rpm to 3k i can hear my exhaust then after that all i can hear is the intake... its loud and i like it!

My closed box Volant was cool, made a noise along with the blower, but now that I switched to an open intake(no heat shield at all) its way better. I also have alot more open space for air to flow in so that helps at the lower speeds, but it still picks up quite nicely.
