Just bought 2014 frontier. I know that the dealership changed the oil before I bought it. Frontier has 89k miles on it. So I‘m trying to get input on what most of frontier owners use when they change their own oil. Pennzoil Platinum Vs Mobil 1.....go!
if you’ve used both in the frontier which do you think performs better. I mostly do mix driving. Even amount of Highway and city driving.

I use Quaker State Ultimate Durability in my '19 Frontier, but I've only had it for 22,000 miles so far. In my '21 4runner I use Pennzoil Platinum, seems good but I've only had this one for 9,000 miles.

Never used Mobil 1 so can't comment there! However, I've thought hard about using Wal-Mart's SuperTech Full Synthetic. It's $4 cheaper per jug than Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Fun fact, Pennzoil owns Quaker State.

I don't think either of them will "perform" better than the other. They're both oil. I run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 and Wix XP filters. They're fine, the engine runs well with no noises. Can't really ask for more.

The cheap stuff sold by Walmart, Amazon, etc is also very good oil and for the price is hard to beat.

I use mobil 1, gf6/sp rated, regular silver bottle, and change it every 4k. Engine oil looks amazing.

And engineering blog I read rates it very well, along with quaker state and valvoline. This will ruffle some feather, but quaker state synthetic in gf6/sp form juts beat out amsoil....

Anyway, I choose mobil 1 becuase it's what my dealer uses and I'm still under a cpo warranty.

Change is regularly and often, and no modern oil will let you down. The vq40 only requires sn rated oil, we are at sp which has greater requirements for GDI engines.

Mobil 1 has a rebate going till end of September. Can be ordered online at wally's. I have never tried it but at this price I might. Get up to $30 back on Mobil 1™ motor oil

Last couple changes I have used Castrol Magnatec in my fronty based on the recommendation at BITOG - and it actually seems to quieten the rattle on startup a little - so might stick with that.

I also own a Xterra with 370 000 miles on it - and most if its life it ran on dyno oil - whatever brand was available - changed every 4000 miles or so and its running fine. With dyno no longer readily available I switched to semi synthetic - and fwiw the castrol sem syn in the white bottle made the already leaking valve cover gaskets leak much worse. Switched to havoline semi syn and it went back to its normal slow leak. I actually have the new valve covers - just haven't gotten to doing it.

depends on which country you want to give your money to lol
I have Amsoil in it right now. Probably will do Royal Purple next, because why not, it's fun. 10k intervals because it's easy to keep track of, and less than that with full syn is a waste

BITOG is an awesome resource

Don't get too excited. It's just another online forum.
And like every other online forum, 95% of the posters have no clue whatsoever what they are posting about.

If you want an "awesome resource", get it from the major oil companies and chemical companies published whitepapers.

I have always used Amsoil Signature Series 5-30. Decided on my last oil change to try Rotella 5-30 Synthetic gas truck oil. Found it to keep motor just as quiet as the Amsoil and it was 1/2 the price. Also ALWAYS use Wix XP filters.

Any quality 5w-30 oil and an equally good quality filter. Change it on time and you’ll be fine for the life of your truck.
I’ve been on here for 14 years and can’t recall any engine failures due to a lubrication failure. If there is one many times it’s do to an owner related maintenance failure.

Pennzoil came out with a new “full synthetic” oil that is like 17 bucks for 5 qts at Walmart. It’s an entry level synthetic (whatever that means) but it’s API SN rated so should be perfect for 5k oci’s. I like to stick with the 5k and I feel it’s a waste using high dollar synthetic oils for that.

Some Frontiers were 3750 OCI and some are/were 5000 OCI. My '15 SV 4.0/6-sp is in the former category.

Nissan is always changing their oil change intervals; I've seen it bounce back and forth between 3750 and 7500 miles over the years and then the 5000 mile interval came into play. I've been using Supertech 5W30 Full-synthetic in my vehicle for well over a decade at 7500 intervals and no issues. I've even had my R51's oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs with 7500 and 12000 mile samples (engines with 150,000+ miles on it in both cases) and the results were great! They stated on the 7500 sample that I could extend oil changes to 9500 miles. On the 12000 miles sample, they said it looked great but my TBN number was 0, meaning that the additive package had been spent and it was time to change the oil; the 12000 miles was a result of not being able to get the oil changed at the time and I still follow my 7500 mile intervals, today. Other than replacing the timing chains on both of the VQ40DE engines (which was a manufacturer defect rather than an issue caused my maintenance), both of my engines are still running strong and quiet with 217,000 and 270,000 miles, respectively, and don't burn any noticeable amount of oil between oil changes. At $16/5-quart jug, I don't see any reason to change oil brand at this point. FYI, I use only Nissan or Purolator Pure One oil filters.

As stated above use 5W30 synthetic or non-synthetic, your choice. The brand name is irrelevant, as far as I know no one has ever damaged their engine by using the wrong brand of motor oil. Always replace the filter when you change the oil, use a good name brand filter.
