I am considering trading my 2008 auto trans Frontier, for a 2010 6-speed manual trans Frontier (my fourth Frontier). I would like to hear opinions from currrent 6 speed owners to see if they are still pleased with their choice.
I am looking for an SE 4X4 with value package and moonroof but don't find any moonroof manuals on the website locator. My dealer can order it but don't care to wait three months.
I appreciate the input from all of you so let me know your thoughts on my idea.

I love mine and am getting 22-23 mpg with it. I recently did a little adjustment to the clutch, and it only made it better. I would highly recommend the 6 speed.

you must want a manual if you are considering trading in an 08......i just bought my 09, new, and drove 300 miles to get it. why 300 miles ? because it is a pro-4x 6 spd !!!

i sold my 99 wrangler which was a 5 spd. many fellow members told me if i wanted a stick, not to settle for an auto, because i wasnt going to regret it.

trust me, i love my truck and i am super happy i found a 6 spd. its effortless, from the clutch to the gear box !!!

i say go for it...

I have a 6 spd and im loving it! very responsive and great gas mileage! just 1 more thing to make the frontier 1 of the best trucks on the market imo :)

Dittoes on the above -- I really like mine and enjoy the extra fuel economy too. I ordered my truck to get the 6-Speed and it took about two months, which matched what the Dealer told me. You Dealer's quote of three months sounds pessimistic.

As a heads up, some owners have reported short clutch life, but the problem doesn't seem extremely common. I have only 23,000 on my '06 and it's been fine so far.

I'm liking what I am reading so far. Personally I've never needed a clutch replacement in any of my trucks before 90,000 miles or more. As long as you don't flog the tar out of a vehicle they last. Hopefully they can locate what I want. My last three trucks have been auto but the first six were manual and I still miss shifting, especially in the snow.

It's alright if you don't rock crawl or do extreme 4x4. Even in 4Lo, i wish i had an automatic. If you treat the clutch right, I'm sure it can last you to 90,000 miles. MY clutch isn't as strong as it used to be, since i burned it a couple of times off-roading. Once in snow, while stuck in a ditch, the other from using 4hi instead of 4lo (was not riding the clutch). I'm at 35k miles. I'm pretty cautious now, since i don't have the money to spend on a new clutch install, hoping it will last another 35k miles.

Post below me brought up something, "a lot of work". TRUE. If you live in a big city and commute often, try to avoid traffic! If your driving up mountain roads and there are a crap load of curvy roads, be prepared to constantly shift unless you want to burn gas fast. But you would know that already, since you've already had 4 manuals in the past

if all your doing is pavement driving then a stick is awesome! if your planning on going on trails and actually using the off road package for what it was made for, then your going to find that its alot more work...

overall i'm very happy that i chose a manual instead of a wuss-o-matic.

I like the 6 speed for the most part. In the winter when it's cold it takes a bit to get it into first, but once it starts warming up it's great. I will try amsoil fluid on my next tranny change to see if that works better. The other thing I hate is reverse, it's way too high. I always have to use a lot of clutch action to back out of my driveway. I can't just let it out and go.

i love my 6speed, great for wheeling if you know how to drive stick right!
going downhill put it in 1st and let the gearing get you down, where as automatic your riding your brakes. the crawl ratio with 6speed is lower than automatic just so you know-42:1. not to mention my 6speed is faster than automatic to, considering i know how to drive it well-but its well known less drivetrain loss with stick putting down more hp/tq.

I would suggest driving one a bit to see what you think. I wish I had driven an automatic before gettting mine. It's ok, but the throws are long, clutch travel is excessive (both normal for a truck) and it's kinda notchy - combine this with jerky throttle response, and you'll find it takes concentration to drive smoothly. 6th is also retardedly tall, reserved only for flat ground. I think it's decent for what it is, but compared to the manual shift cars I've had in the past, it's a bit of a letdown.....

As for the mileage improvement, it depends where you live. On hilly terrain it may actually be worse than the auto because you can't use 6th gear much.

I bought my 6 speed 08 a little more than a year ago. I had to fly to Atlanta to buy it as my local dealer did not have the color I wanted (the local salesman even offered to give me the automatic for free). The only time I regretted buying a stick is after I finished my first half-marathon, pushed in the clutch and every muscle in both legs crossed. After jumping out of the truck in pain, I thought I needed a banana for the crossed muscles. Opening my mouth to eat the banana then made the muscles under my chin cross and I thought I was going to die. My nephew had to drive me home. Buy the stick for the adventure!

'09 PRO-4X here with the 6-speed

I love this tranny! This truck is so much fun to drive, I'm thrilled my Titan became a problem vehicle and I was moved to get the PRO-4X Frontier.

The tranny feels like most other trucks, from a sportscar point of view the throw feels like 3-feet long, and the shifter feels like the linkage is all made from rubber, but it works great and is very easy to shift. In addition I find rev-matching and heel toeing to be easy to accomplish as the pedal placement is also well done.

However, I joke with my friends, it really is only a 5.5 speed as 6th feels like 5, 5th feels like 4, and 1st feels like 0.5. 1st is soooooo low a lot of time I just start in 2nd if the truck is rolling at all.

Bottom like, great tranny, great shifter, great pedal placement, great clutch; I'm very pleased. I feel really bad for those slushing along in an automatic in this truck... :)

i too start in 2nd if the truck is rolling slowly.....the 5 spd trans in my jeep felt like it i had longer throws.... but i also agree with the " rubber " feel

it's very smooth !!!

I've never owned an automatic and the couple my wife had before we got married drove me nuts! I test drove an automatic SE VP and a manual Nismo and went for the manual Nismo. The only reason I even test drove the SE was because I'd driven trucks with manuals before and they sucked, with loooong clutch travel and loooong shift throws. But the Frontier shocked me. It shifts more like a car than any other truck I've ever driven! Hell, it even shifts better than my wife's SE-R Spec V!!!

The other difference, and this may be different on 2010 models, but I think the 2008 Nismo had the ABLSD and the SE didn't, so when pulling out of a steep road and making a 90* turn, the auto SE smoked one rear tire even at partial throttle. With the manual Nismo, I was able to give it more gas without breaking the rear wheels loose at all and that sold me. Plus, I felt that the Nismo with Bilsteins rode better on the rough roads than the SE did.

Lol. Long throws... I learned highway stick in an 86 f150 with a four speed. Where the shifter starts at the floor. I also drive some 13 speed semis and dump trucks and I usually double clutch for the practice, talk about heavy clutch pedal. The seem to require 25 to 40 pounds pressure to get the pedal down so my nismo is like driving a toy after a night of a real truck.

I flew from Wisconsin to Pennsylvania to get a stick shift in blue as the nearest dealer just sold the one I wanted about an hour before me!! The one in pa was two years old with 32k on it too instead of a brand new 08. California had a grey 08 nismo but California sucks and the grey does too so I ended up with the used one.
