I've alluded to my less than wonderful experience with this truck in the less than 2 weeks I've had it, but today it decided to add to my frustrations.

So to go along with my existing gripes (which I'm told that parts are on national back order for) today the Rockford Fosgate head unit decides to start rebooting on its own.

So my issues with the brand new truck that had a sticker of $39k:

Interior trim piece that continuously falls off. Fell off when I picked it up. Dealer tech "fixed" it. Fell off again within 5 minutes. Dealer ordered new piece. National backorder (must be a common problem)

Rear seat center armrest fell off the first time my son lowered it. Dealer ordered replacement part. National backorder. (must also be a common problem)

Tailgate FRONTIER letters. The "O" looks like it was installed by a drunk. The rest seem OK. Will point it out to the dealer when I go to get the elusive parts installed.

Tailgate NISSAN badge above the handle. Installed crooked. The tailgate looks like it was repaired by a low rate body shop after an accident.

I didn't notice the poorly done tailgate when I picked it up because hey, "Woo Hoo! New Truck!". Now it makes me wonder if they can't get the easy stuff right, how bad is the major stuff?

And now today the head unit decides to reboot on its own. Twice within an hour (on SiriusXM). This will also be pointed out to the dealer when (if ever) I go to get the parts installed.

I loved my old 2011 and I would go back to it in a heartbeat if possible.

I bought this truck to be a long term vehicle but now I've already developed a foul impression of it and will likely dump it as soon as I am at the point where I won't take too much of a bath.

This is absolutely the worst new vehicle experience I've ever had. This truck has been back to the dealer more times in 2 weeks than any other new vehicle I've ever bought did in years.

Needless to say, this is my last Nissan.

First world problems, I know, but I'm really bummed over this thing.

Nissan USA has contacted me to say that they will "expedite" getting the parts to me.

Maybe they will get the parts and the other issues resolved and I will fall in love with it again. I can only hope.

Not holding my breath there.

Sorry for the rant but I had to tell somebody. :pullout:

Rant over.

My suggestion would be to document the issues that you're seeing with that Nissan rep that's supposedly expediting your parts, and to ask that person to get in-touch with the dealer service writer that will handle the repairs to make sure that they're handled properly. Be sure to document the radio issue with them, and ask if there are any technical service bulletins covering issues with that particular unit.

We've had a few issues with my wife's new-purchase Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. Eventually our complaints did reach the right people and they appear to have been fixed. It sucks (trust me, I was damn-near yelling at the service-advisor and the service department manager with our infant in my arms as the only thing holding me back) but they eventually got it straightened out.

What piece of trim was the original one to come off?

You mind as well let them know about the letters and badges now because that will have to be ordered, as well. This way you can get it done all in one shot. When I was a tech, we used to call them "Holiday cars" or "Friday cars" because it seemed like it was made right at the end of the work week when the factory workers were trying to get done and go home (so they got a little sloppy). I had a 1997 Frontier that was made in the first week of January, right after New Years. The bed was crooked and there were a number of other small but annoying issues. It wasn't so bad for me because I just had them make up a repair order and I got paid under warranty for fixing everything that was screwed up. After that, I was happy with the truck and got 10 years and 205,000 miles out of it until the fuel injector wire shorted on the cylinder head and cooked the main harness all the way behind the dash.

Dr. Z.
There is no excuse for Nissan or the dealership to sell you the vehicle with some of the visual flaws you say it has. That said, a lesson for you is don't let the "Woo Hoo! New Truck!" get in your way of going over the vehicle with a fine tooth comb before signing the papers. Heck bring someone else along for an extra set of eyes.

Like anything mechanical a product can come off the assembly line flawed. That is what warranty is for.

The trim piece is the headliner cover for the center high mount stoplight access.

It is a gaping hole that is right in my line of vision every time I look in the rearview mirror.

As far as the letters, I picked up the truck with only 6 miles on it, so I don't think the dealer went over it too much before delivery.

I've purchased many new vehicles and never had the need to go over them with a fine tooth comb.

I was lulled into a false sense of security by thinking that this truck had been in production for years so "bugs" should be minimal. I was wrong.

While having a warranty is a nice thing, I don't enjoy hanging out in a dealer service department waiting lounge, regardless of the free bottled water and popcorn.

I initially had plans for Shrockworks bumpers front and rear, winch, Bully Pro wheels, and other goodies.

I've already added White Knuckle sliders but everything else is on hold now because if this truck keeps going at its current rate I will drop it like a psychotic girlfriend at the earliest opportunity.

Dealer is never going to go nuts with a new car. They're supplied with a checklist from the manufacturer and unless the dealer has prior experience with problems that the manufacturer has not acknowledged that they get saddled with, they're going to stick with that checklist. Things like checking torque on various key fasteners, verifying fluid levels, installing any parts that are intentionally not installed prior to arriving at the dealership, removing any shipping packaging that was intended to keep the vehicle undamaged during freight, that sort of thing. They're not going to specifically look at the decals because there's probably hundreds or thousands of other things that they'd also have to look at if they go into that level of detail, and the new-car-prep lot-boys are probably the lowest-paid workers in the dealership.

Absolutely it sucks that there are problems especially something that feels like it's taunting you every time you drive, but document, document, document. They should fix 'em, especially if Nissan corporate is breathing down their necks. Considering the poor quality that vehicles used to have that affected powertrains straight off the dealer lots, this really isn't that severe.

Too easy to expect perfection, but that is what everyone wants...and rightfully so. Your gripes are for real, but issues are mostly cosmetic. This could be WAY, WAY worse. Take a deep breath. Totally sucks to waste your time, so see/inquire what your dealer can do to make this situation a lil easier to stomach/tolerate. Here's to this all passing as seamlessly as possible. Good luck!

While warranties are great, I guess I just expect too much from a new vehicle.

The truck is 2 weeks old and I've already spent around 3 1/2 hours hanging out in their service area lounge, which is about 3 hours more than my total time spent in lounges with my previous 6 new cars.

1/2 hour at delivery while they futzed with the headliner trim piece (showing me my new truck, piece fell off, they took it around back to fix for about a 1/2 hour, fell back off within 5 minutes), 2 hours the next day while they jury rigged the rear armrest so that it wouldn't fall off (still flops around, parts on order), and another hour a few days later for them to adjust the utilitrack rails (I forgot to mention that the utilitrack rails were out of alignment. I discovered that when I went to remove the bed extender and it could not be removed without disassembling it).

It doesn't give me a warm fuzzy knowing I'll be there again waiting for them to fix the tailgate, and hoping they don't screw up the paint fixing the badges.

And of course whatever transpires with the head unit. I'm sure parts will be ordered.

Minor cosmetic issues, yes, but there seems to be an awful lot of them and I've not had to deal with these kinds of things in a LONG time on a new vehicle.

The best warranty is the one you never have to use. I have plenty of things I'd rather spend my time doing than watching my new truck through the big glass window while it sits in a service bay.

What other new vehicles have you purchased over the yrs?
I just picked up my new 2018 Fronty about 5 months ago and the only thing wrong was it needed a better cleaning and the cover over the bolt on the grab handle fell out. When it was installed, they broke one of the tabs. It was replaced quickly. The dealer ordered it and had it shipped to my home so I wouldn't have to make the 50 mile trip for a snap in part.

These are only the ones I purchased brand new, although the used ones I've purchased with low miles have also been great (except for that turbo Rx-7, that wonderful, cursed, beautiful, demon possessed Rx-7. I want another one. I want to pull my own fingernails with vise grip pliers. GAAHHH! I loved it/I hated it with equal passion)

1994 Taurus SHO - Never went back to dealer for anything

1997 Ford Explorer - Never went back to dealer for anything

2003 Mitsubishi Montero (the 7 seater fullsize, not the sport) - Never went back to dealer for anything and I still have it 15 years later. It survived raising both of my sons. THE best vehicle I've ever owned. Total of $70 spent in non-maintenance items over that time frame. A $50 tensioner pulley (which I later found I could have fixed for $10) and a $20 solenoid. That's it. Still on the original front brake rotors at 150k but I'm starting to feel pulses when stopping from highway speeds so I guess I'll have to soon push that total over $100. Looking at the hardware underneath is truly impressive. Way overbuilt truck. Edit: I forgot. I did have to replace a $2 O-ring on the rear of the passenger cylinder head because it was leaking. But that was 10 minutes in my driveway and at 120k miles.

2011 Nissan Altima - Never went back to dealer for anything.

2011 Toyota Rav4 - Went to the dealer once for a recall. They immediately put us in a loaner for a day. Since the recall was scheduled we just walked in and signed the recall papers. Time in dealership was maybe 15 minutes.

2017 Jeep Wrangler - Steering wheel leather developed a dimple in it. Dealer immediately ordered new steering wheel which arrived in a couple of days. Put me in a loaner for a day while they switched it out. Time at dealer maybe 20 minutes.

So maybe I'm spoiled or have just gotten lucky with well built vehicles. Unfortunately, this Frontier is not starting off to be like the others.

Once again, maybe they will get these issues ironed out and I can fall in love with it again. That's what I hope anyway.

I hope they can get things resolved by the time of the Black Friday sale at Discount Tire because I want a set of Bully Pro wheels.

But if stuff is still falling off of it, no way. I won't put another dime into it.

I know its depressing for you but if you read on here the majority of us have no such problems. Sadly it sounds like a fluke, perhaps if it keeps up you can use the "lemon law" to get Nissan to buy it back.

Just to cheer you up a bit, a friend has a beautiful Chevy truck (2016 I believe), he is a car guy and takes good care of it. I rode with him a couple of days ago and he informed me his a/c had just quit, his NAV was giving him fits and he has a window switch not working. Made me appreciate my 2015 Nissan even more!

Good luck.

I dont think you've had exceptionally good luck with the other vehicles, just some bad luck on this one. But as has been mentioned they are mostly cosmetic and should be able to be aesily fixed.
Good luck and I too hope you fall back in love with your truck.

Mine has been in the body shop for the last 3 weeks after hitting a deer and doing over 10k in damage. $7.5k in parts alone from dealer!
I was really missing my truck. Got it back 2 days ago.

On a separate note. What are you expecting to pay for the wheels on black Friday? That is a nice looking wheel.

Not sure, but I find it strange that I can get a different price on the wheel depending on how I add it to the cart.

Sometimes I get $204 per wheel and sometimes I get $189 per wheel, a $60 per set difference just from a mouse click.

If I can get them for $150 per wheel I'll be downright giddy.

Just thought I'd pipe in that on the way home last night my CEL came on with p00d2 code. It has a TSB for it so might be prepared for that in the future since mines the same. Just don't want it to be the straw that breaks the camel's back! I have appointment for the reprogramming tomorrow. Still better than my old '12 Hyundai veloster! Lol.

#18 ·
Thanks for the heads up.

I only have 400 miles on the truck so I don't think I've driven it far enough to trip that code yet.

I'll have them check and see if mine needs the update.

I did find a lot of TSBs referring to the navigation/head unit so that might be why mine has suddenly decided to start resetting itself.

One of the ordered parts came in to the dealer today so I'm going by tomorrow to get it installed (headliner trim piece) and to point out the crooked emblems on the tailgate and get those ordered.

#19 ·
I only have 7k on mine. Way too early for a CEL and kinda embarrassing, but at least its something simple.

#20 ·
Welp, 2.5 more hours in the nice service lounge today.

They got the headliner trim piece in and it has at least stayed on until I got home.

They also updated the head unit firmware so hopefully the rebooting is resolved.

As far as the arm rest, the part came in but did not repair it satisfactorily so they are going to replace the entire armrest. Parts on order.

Pointed out the crooked emblems. Parts now on order.

My salesman and the SM came out to talk to me and express their concern about all my issues. I asked them to make me a good deal on the silver 2011 sitting out front (my old Frontier).

They assured me that everything will be taken care of.

I hope so. Maybe this next round of fixes will finally get it to where it needs to be.

At least the dealership is working for you in the right direction. Maybe the next trip will be your last.

(I had to have the dealership replace the passenger front seat in my Pro. For some odd reason the seat back was warped. When measuring from the seat back to the front of the seat the left was 1" longer than the right. I noticed it before measuring. The fabric lines didn't line up. Driver seat was fine. Dealership replaced with no hesitation.

Hope all gets fixed for you. I enjoy my Pro every day that I drive it.

My 2018 has the rockford fosgate stereo, too and it has rebooted twice in the past couple weeks. Mine says it is trying to do some type of update. I haven't been to the dealer yet... Unfortunately, Hurricane Micheal wiped out the dealer and they aren't back up yet. I could go to Ft. Walton Beach dealer, but I think I'd rather wait to get it looked at locally. Hopefully, it doesn't go completely out before then.

Post up some pics Doc Z.

My 1st Frontier was 2004 auto 4 banger. Into the 2nd week of owning it the steering column locked up in park. Dealer picked it up with a flat bed.
Other than Pink Milk Shake - $4600 out of pocket and timing chain tensioners - $2k ish out of pocket, my 2006 Frontier has been good... ::wink::

I'm going to test drive an 18 P4X 6spd manual next time home.

Edit: Now I've been driving the Titan for a couple of days (still no word on my Frontier) and several things I've noticed.

Size: This thing is HUGE. Tons of room.

MPG: I thought my Frontier was thirsty. This is definitely thirstier.

Stereo: This is an SV model and the stereo in it blows away the Rockford Fosgate in my Frontier.

Sound: The V8 sounds glorious. I love to hear it. I kinda wonder if that has any bearing on the observed MPG?

Tech: No comparison, the Titan is light years ahead in this regard. From the dash displays to the 8 speed automatic, I truly wish the Frontier had some of this tech. That said though, I still prefer the Frontier overall.

Man reading all this sucks. Be glad the dealership is working with you, I've dealt with dealerships in the past that basically said not our problem. Which then ended up with me having to call and e-mail the north american headquarters 8426784578589453789342786 times. (won't be getting another VW ever)

Regardless, I hope they make everything right and you end up with a bit-chin truck.

More excitement today.

On the way to church this evening and there was a loud POP somewhere inside the dash and the cab filled with the smell of burning electronics, to the point where we had to open all windows and the sunroof (all electronics are still stock, right at 1k miles)

Nothing electronic seemed to stop working and I never saw smoke (but it was dusk) but the smell was very powerful.

Now it's sitting in the driveway (not putting this thing in the garage just in case it decides to take up smoking) where tomorrow it will get a free tow to the dealership.

Oh Joy.

Edit: Just looked at my first post in this thread on Oct 25 and noticed I said this...

"Now it makes me wonder if they can't get the easy stuff right, how bad is the major stuff?"

Needless to say now I'm really starting to think about this.

Also...

"Nissan USA has contacted me to say that they will "expedite" getting the parts to me."

Remaining parts still have a 1 month+ ETA.

Got my truck back today.

No problem found, can't say I'm surprised though.

They didn't take apart the dash and look inside because they couldn't duplicate the issue.

At least it is documented if it ever causes an issue down the road.

I have to say though, after driving the Titan for a few days, I really like my Frontier even more.

If they can handle all these niggling little quirks I can love this truck again.

Here's hoping.
