thank you for being the most compassionate of this whole group

yes it has to do with physical issues, thanks to 6 decades of working in dealership shops fixing cars and trucks for the morons who abused them

i have both shoulders in need of replacement ,so steering this truck isn't easy, anymore, trading it in with a 20k lose is out of the question ,

my asking was hoping someone would know if a pump from a older might fit or maybe someone had read or heard of a possible help. NOT get my six ripped apart by rude inconsiderate younger generation morons ,
as if any forum will allow sharing that mod. Go ask your dealer

i have a borgeson P/s kit in my 64 vette, to get it more sensitive all i need to do was swap a spring in the pump outlet, which made me ask if anyone felt it possible in a gen 3
I'd imaging it would, worked on that guys toyota. Don't think these 3rd gen frontiers would be all that different when it comes to power steering pumps.

The frontier is the only vehicle we have and don't have money to buy a back up P/S pump otherwise I'd be interested in trying it myself.

At least OP is in a financial position where he can afford to take the depreciation hit if he needs to. Advise some online research and a good test drive before buying the replacement. As another old guy, sometimes I wonder about going to leasing since our needs can change more abruptly.

That would be a waste of time since the dealer don't know nuthin...

And, YES if someone had a mod for this that works out... forums would have no reason top disallow someone from using their forum to tell others about it.

Does this mean they should quit belly aching about it?

Well sir, while my suggestion was meant to illicit a chuckle, I was also being serious.

The idea didn't come from a younger generation moron. It came from a older generation 80 year old MAN that is currently in the hospital recovering from a quadruple bypass. He's not one that would seek compassion from anyone for any reason.

Over the years he switched from the product in the pic I posted to some that look like a baseball bat donut weight.
He always kept them in every vehicle as far back as I can remember.

Opening with "Being a old fart" is what led me to assume that you were in possession of a sense of humor.
Thank goodness power steering was invented. Otherwise, you'd have to Uber around or rely on public transportation because a vehicle without power steering wouldn't be an option.

...
  1. Reach out to Z1 and see if they are willing to make an overdrive pulley + belt combo for the PS
I wonder if it's really the pump drive ratio or if there's some pressure relief valve that's limiting the steering assist boost. I'd bet there's a valve in that circuit that's limiting pressure although it may be built in to the pump itself. In the tractor world it's not unheard of to 'shim' those hydro pressure valves to get more performance from the hydraulics.

He shouldn't have to... people should have a little compassion on others without having to be asked
I wonder if elderly folks waiting at a bus stop with bags full of groceries in triple digit heat would be sympathetic to the power steering woes someone has with their air conditioned 2023 year model vehicle. They certainly should, huh?

being a old fart who worked in auto dealers till retirement, i now find i need to face having both shoulder joints replaced or find a way to lose the armstrong steering on my 23 SV. selling i'm not about willing to take the 22k offers i have gotten for a trade in for a suv, on a 2 year old 40k truck

has anyone figured a way to increase the the pressures to help decrease the amount of effort needed to steer the truck?

Raise your tire pressure.

Actually their priorities do not include other people's un- necessary problems so they couldn't give a fat rat's backside.

Some things in life are much more important than whether some vehicle's steering isn't light enough

I can't imagine pulling off a modification like this without extensive work being done and a massive outlay of cash. Everything is possible if you throw enough money at it. As you're a retired master tech, have you ever seen anything like this done on any vehicle?

I think like the most economical solution would be to trade the vehicle in for one with a power steering system you feel is more comfortable. Just my two cents.

I wonder if the Nissan Titans steer easier and if their p/s systems could be retrofitted in a way to help the frontier p/s system to have more assist. My father in law loves my truck, but I have to push him away from getting one because of his bad shoulders.

You might very well be on to something there.

Some guys have been doing Titan engine / tranny / suspension swaps.... the time has come to do a power steering pump / rack swap and see how that works out.

A couple of thoughts:

Consider conferring with one or more shops that 'modernize' old classics with new suspension, brakes, and steering, and see what they would recommend (or steer you away from). They may have some ideas or tips.

Wouldn't skinnier tires/higher tire pressure reduce the grabbing power, making it more dangerous on curves and for emergency stops, especially in wet weather? Sounds like a bad trade off to me.
