Overheating only when using cruise control!!! help

Ok so I've never seen/heard of this before my frontier will get hot cruising at 70 after about 20mins but if I just use the pedal it doesn't. When it does get hot with the cruise on I can turn it off and keep driving and it cools back down. Also when it gets hot on cruise the pedal seems to stick at the top until it cools back off. What the deuce?

thats an odd problem, and a first for me.
my first thought is that you have an automatic transmission, and in cruise control with overdrive on, the truck is hunting for gears creating excessive heat in the transmission and the transmission heat exchanger built into the lower radiator is bringing additional heat into the main cooling system and pushing it over the top.

sounds a little crazy, i know, but i'm just spouting off an idea. for starts, check your transmission fluid level with the truck idling in neutral at operating temperature.

A tranny and radiator flush, to freshen up the fluids, couldn't hurt as a starting point.

Is it overheating or just the gage showing too hot? If just the gage, I'd look for an electrical problem in the circuits near the dash.

How far does the gage go toward "H"? I'd let it get really hot and find a place to safely pull off, shut it down, lift the hood and if its hot, you should be able to tell. Listen for coolant boiling or bubling. If you do this several times and cannot determine a difference from hot to not hot, I'd suggest you research the electrical diagrams. You may have some stray current using the cruse causing the voltage to change for the coolant sensor.

It may not be hunting. When I set the cruise, it will hesitate for a few seconds and drop out of overdrive. Running interstate speeds with OD may be causing you to run hot.

BTW if this is the case and you figure out how to actually fix it, let me know:smile:. I just stopped using the cruise.

my cruise never drops out of overdrive at interstate speeds. It will only drop on pretty steep upgrade. I have never had a temperature problem with cruise control on versus pedal control.
