Needs For Towing a Small Trailer

I have a 2010 LX (4.0) without the tow package. I want to get a small travel trailer (something within the truck's tow capacity) and am trying to figure out exactly what I need to do to the truck. I know I need to get the receiver hitch and wire harness, but I am not sure what else I need to do (e.g., transmission cooler, trailer brake controller, etc.) I am newbie at towing. I also would prefer to overdo it a bit rather than worry about overheating, transmission issues, etc.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Nothing for you to do except the receiver and wiring - that is all tow pack. consists of. All have aux. tranny cooling already. You will need brake controller if trailer has brakes (probably) and wiring is there by steering column for it to plug into. Tow wireing (use Nissan) consists of couple relays to install in passenger kick panel and rear wiring which will plug right into existing wireing. Depending on weight of trailer you might want to use a weight distributing hitch. Lots of threads here about it for further discussion.

Also consider weight of gear, food, water, etc when looking at trailer weights. That stuff can add up fast.

I personally would install a tranny temp gauge. Not sure what your terrain will be but if I had a trailer it would see lots of hill climbs out here in the NW. I would hate to find out the hard way if I got my tranny too hot.

A Nissan tech told my dad that you cannot burn up a Nissan trans towing. If it gets hot it will go into limp mode. It's true because it did. The truck wasn't, factory equipped with the aux trans cooler. Before it left the dealer that day it was. No problem at all after that.

Hmm, good to know. I guess I'll have my trans temp gauge for piece of mind then.

Hi: Cal2121... I got a 2010 crew cab V6 auto on the year end clearance and it didn't have a tow pkg. My RV tech got the relay harness for the pass. side kick panel and added the fifth wheel hitch& harness to the truck. The tranny cooler is already there. We love our new trailer/truck combo.

Hi: sark217... It's a Husky 16K EZ Roller with double pivot head. Over kill to say the least as I have never had to slide it. I bought the trailer and truck, '02General short box, as a unit used, so the hitch was part of the deal.
I think the prev. owner paid $2300 installed with wiring, box liner, & tranny cooler.
We had it swaped out when trading so it only cost me $300. to r&r and add the relay etc.

Also need to equip my Fronty with tow equipment. Seems people here like Curt hitches for value/durability. For the Nissan trailer wiring, is there someplace I should look other than the Nissan parts counter? The harness connector mounts to a plastic bracket attached to the bumper, correct?
