Is Nissan Suspending Production???

During the quest for a new Frontier a dealership just told me that Nissan is halting production of the new Frontiers until May or June. The dealership would not even let me put money down to order it.

Considering the times and the poor truck sales it does not sound entirely unreasonable; however, it seems bogus that someone could not order one if they wanted.

Can anyone else verify this?

pretty sure nissan halting production until may would have made the news. I havent heard anything about it. I think the dealer wants you to buy something they already have on their lot.

yeah, sounds odd, this definitely would have made the news, i'd just try another dealership that is willing to deal with you

exactly, they are built here, definitely would hear about a major plant in the auto industry closing for 5 months, even if it was just to point out that it's not just the 'big 3' that are having troubles (in fact, some would point to it and claim that the UAW obviously isnt the problem in detroit since one of the 'imports' is having issues too)

The weird thing is that they only had 3 other Frontiers on the lot. None of them had what I wanted so I left without any resistance.

If that was a line to try and get you to buy one of the three trucks on the lot, that salesman needs to find another line of work!!!

Sounds like that salesman doesn't want a job for very long. I would personally call that dealer and ask for the sales manager, and tell him what your salesman said to you. I'd be willing to bet that the sales manager would tell you otherwise, and probably kiss your butt to get you to buy a truck from him. Dealerships are hurting right now, and one less salesman plus a truck sale would definitely help their bottom line!

I did speak to the manager. He told me the very same thing, and there was actually a big meeting with all the sales guys outside discussing the very issue when I pulled up. They did not have any 4X4s on the lot and they knew that is what I wanted... so I don't really think it was a sales tactic to get me to buy something on the lot.

Not true!!! I work for Nissan in Canton, MS, where the Titan, Armada, Altima, and Infiniti QX56 are built. The Frontier is made in Smyrna, TN. They have reduced the number of Frontiers built per week, but not stopped. What dealer is it?

PM sent.
It is Baker Jackson Nissan in Houston.

Sales of Frontiers have dropped dramatically. Unit sales are shown below:

Month 2008 2007

Sept 1534 5480
Oct 1551 4959
Nov 1171 5480

It is possible that the inventory of unsold Frontiers is so great that it warrants shutting the line down. I don't think this mean the factory is shut down since they make other vehicles there also.

It may be that the salesperson was lying and just wanted a sale. Nevertheless, I think it will be very difficult to order a purpose made vehicle.

If your looking for a Pro-4X they do seem to be few and far between. So maybe he was trying to get you into one of the ones he had?

I think we're going to see a few plants temporarily shut down due to the economic climate. I know Chrysler just did and like I said, Toyota did that in San Antonio. They went back online not to long ago.

Ford and GM have stooped production at several plants, with GM closing the most.

Toyota has also delayed the start up of its Tupelo, MS plant. They were originally going to build Highlanders there but switch directions to build the Prius. Now they are going to complete the building and put production on hold. Those already hired for the facility will be sent to other Toyota locations.

Nissan has never layed off Nissan labor in the 26ish years they have been building cars and trucks in the US. They are working hard to prevent that from happening. We have cut back production hours and slowed the lines down to compensate for the slowed economy. Excess Nissan employees have replace contract help in non production jobs, at their regular pay, to retain them.
I'm not saying it won't happen, but every attempt possible is being made to prevent it.

Thank Gawd there is no UAW there...otherwise Nissan would probably be in the crap tank too. But that is a different thread for a different place...

Glad to hear Nissan is trying to keep its people. Good help is hard to find. It also doesn't put people on their butts with the current unemployment rates.

This does not confirm a work stoppage, but clearly there has been a slow down.

Automotive News | August 4, 2008 - 12:01 am EST - Nissan offered to buy out about 1,200 hourly and salaried employees at its Tennessee factories, blaming slow sales of full-sized pickups and SUVs. Pain spreads beyond Detroit: Nissan offers employee buyouts | 1853 Chairman

Nissan’s voluntary buyouts will span three years and cut the Tennessee work force by 18 percent. Lump-sum payments of up to $125,000 have been offered to technicians and salaried employees at its Smyrna assembly and nearby Decherd powertrain plants. The Smyrna plant also will eliminate night-shift truck production effective Aug. 11.

big difference between that and shutting down a plant for 5 months.

and I would think they would still build a vehicle the way you want it if it means they get that one more sale.

Smyrna has not halted production of the Frontier, Pathfinder, or Xterra. We have not halted production of Titans. We have decreased the number of Titans built. We are only working 1 shift for Titan, Armada, Quest, and Infiniti QX56 and 3 shifts for Altima. We have been on Christmas shutdown for 2 weeks but do that every year. Start Altima production again tonight and all else tomorrow morning.

Yes Smyrna did have buyouts, mostly those who were approaching retirement age.

4X2s are most common around here as well. I have seen 1 Pro4X on a lot since they came out. Most people around here look for a full size truck when they want 4X4. Usually wind up a jacked up mall crawler!

Most of the NISMOs I've seen are 4X2.

Well she did it. Called me after work to tell me that she bought a red 2009 Nissan Crew Cab 4X4. She didn't hold out for the 4X4 Pro Sport option (skid plates etc, 4K more and my choice) because she wanted it to be RED and they couldn't deliver the Sport option in any color other than Silver. She's Happy and I'm glad that she bought a new 4X4 vehicle to be safe in. Ended up buying at Andy Mohr Nissan and the salesman was pleasant and easy to work with. Thanks to all who gave valuable input. Kudos to Ryan Hayes for being honest and fair

There were only 2 4x4s within 400 miles(!) when I was looking for my truck. I've only seen two other Gen II 4x4 Frontiers since I bought my truck. One of them being Bill's (Brutal).

That's why when Tha_Reids was making those custom stickers, I made sure to keep the 4x4 part on there on my tailgate. I wanted people to know I was no 2wd poser. So I'm a 4x4 poser. ;) :D

Toyota is closing most of their plants in Japan for 3 days this month, 6 days next month and 5 days in March according to an article on MSN.
