This thread is a how to for the VK56 engine swap. I have taken info from various places and FSMs as well as information shared by forum members.

Anyone who attempts this swap takes full responsibility for their swap, I am not liable for any and all mishaps that may occur. Continue at your own risk!

If I have missed anything please feel free to add!

What I have learned:
The best way to pull off this swap is to get a Engine, Transmission, wiring harness and ECM from the same type of vehicle. It doesn't have to be from the actual vehicle but it has to be for the same type of vehicle if that makes sense. So for example if you have a 2004-2006 VK56DE, that did not have the flex fuel or VVT option, that engine wont work with a 2007 ecu or wiring harness that has flex fuel or VVT. If you get a engine with flex fuel you not only need a matching engine harness and ecu but you also need to purchase a fuel pump control module and a dropping resistor that you will have to wire up. This is covered later in this post so read through to find that info. You also want to source a engine wiring harness for the type of drivetrain you have (2wd or 4wd). A Manual conversion I believe is very possible and probably easy as the ECU does not appear to be married to the transmission as the transmission control module is actually in the transmission and not the vehicle or ECU.

Part 1: What you need for the swap.
Part 2: Wiring Identification
Part 3: Wire Harness Conversion

Part1:

What you need: (All of this information below I give a big thanks to AndrewVK, ElLlanero and NissanAZ form the Xterra forum.)

***You will 100% need my conversion adapter harness to do this!! It works in conjunction with the stock Titan engine harness*** Contact me for details!

2004-Present VK56DE and the obvious accessories like fuel injectors, starter, power steering pump etc...)
2004-Present VK56DE Transmission 4wd or 2WD depending on your application. (You can convert a 2wd Titan transmission for 4wd application but in most cases its cheaper and easier to buy one already for 4wd)
2004-Present VK56DE Flexplate and Torque Converter
2004-Present VK56DE (ECM) Engine Control Module (Applicable to your engine type)
2004-Present VK56DE Engine Harness (Applicable to your engine and drive train type 2wd or 4wd, transmission harness is built in)
2004-Present VK56DE Engine to Transmission Bolts
2004-Present Titan Engine to Motor Mount Brackets
2004-Present Titan Engine Mounts
V8 Pathfinder or Titan High Pressure Power Steering Line
Titan clutch fan, fan blade
V8 Pathfinder Fan Shroud #21476-ZS20A and #21477-ZS20A (2 Part Piece) or Convert to Electric Temp Controlled Fans.
V8 Pathfinder upper radiator hose or Titan upper radiator hose part #21501-ZS20A (v8 pathfinder)
Titan lower radiator hose (may need to trim to fit) or V8 Pathfinder part #21503-ZS20A and part #2104-7S000
Titan or V8 Pathfinder Water Pipe part #13048-7S000
4cyl Frontier heater core fitting part #92410-EA000
Titan heater core hoses part #14056-7S005 & #14056-7S001 (2 Hoses may need to trim some)
Titan exhaust manifolds and b pipes, aftermarket headers and b pipes work as well

Optional:
Keeping A/C?
2004-Present VK56DE AC Compressor
V8 Pathfinder AC Compressor Low Line Part #92480-ZS21A
2004-Present Titan AC discharge line

*If you are 4wd and staying 4wd you can use your existing transfer case with the Titan transmission.

*You can also use your existing driveshaft
*You will want to use your current alternator as the Titan is wired differently
*Will have to use existing alternator/starter harness
*Will have to have a y pipe made to reconnect to the cat back
*Can use existing trans mount

Ok If your taking on this swap the the nuts and bolts of removing the engine and trans and swapping in the VK56DE should be pretty straight forward, engine and trans mounts are the same etc for the VQ40.

Sinister,

Just to give an update; I have been doing some research and so far, the 2008 V8 Pathfinder engine harness appears to be a direct fit for what we need.

Going through the factory service manual the pinouts for the F14, F32 and F33 plugs are identical to the Frontier. Hopefully, if the actual plugs themselves are identical to the Frontier (they should be), we can do this swap using a 2008 Pathfinder V8 harness and no wiring changes at all. The Pathfinder engine harness will plug in and since all of the Pathfinders were console shift and gasoline engine only, it shouldn't have too much variation from year to year.

Only hard part at that point is finding a Pathfinder V8 ECU, although I am willing to bet a Titan ECU will work.

Update: the 2011 Titan ECU and the 2008 Pathfinder V8 ECU have the exact same pinouts according to the FSM diagrams. The 2008 Pathfinder has the later version of the VK with variable valve timing on the intake cams, so it looks like any 2007+ Titan ECU will work with the 2008 Pathfinder V8 engine harness, which should plug directly into the Frontier main harness.

So, a 2008 V8 Pathfinder engine harness, combined with any 2007+ computer, should start up a 2007+ VK56DE with a floor shift Titan transmission with no cutting or splicing at all.

In addition, I took apart a spare key that I had lying around to see what the chip looks like inside the plastic key housing. The key itself can be popped out of the plastic housing and epoxied back into a different plastic housing with a little effort. SO... if you can get a Titan ECU, BCM, and key from the same vehicle you should be able to start the engine without having to go to the dealer. As long as the ECU, BCM, and key chip are from the same vehicle it will all match up for the anti-theft system. Simply pop the plastic housing off your own key, pop the housing off the Titan key, and then snap your Frontier key into the Titan key's plastic housing.

You can manually reprogram your keyless entry clicker to the new BCM without going to the dealer; there's a procedure for this outlined in the factory service manual.

Awesome news!

Good find! Only issue I see is being lucky enough to find a V8 pathfinder where someone didn't cut the harness anywhere in the bone yard lol. Great info on the BCM, I didn't think of that one. Would be great if you happen to be in the right place at the right time where you would be able to snag the ecu, bcm, keys, wiring harness, Trans and engine out of a rear ended Titan.

All great fail proof methods, and not to shoot them down but there has to be easier ways to piece together this swap and there is! As we cover more ground on this swap the interchange list will grow.

I'm always excited to see activity on this thread. I wonder at what point is it easier to put a frontier body onto a Titan frame/drivetrain. Sinister, it seems like the only thing that will be left on your 'frontier' is the frame, bed and cab.

There has been some new developments when it comes to the repinning of the harness. Nissan uses the same connector housings for all years of Frontiers/Titans/Xterras but I have found during construction of a harness for a forum member that the pins (terminals) types vary from certain years. No worries though I am getting all the pins and links to them together as I type this. All you will have to do is pull the pins out of your harness and match them to the pictures of the terminals and order accordingly. I am also working on trying to source the parts needed to construct a jumper harness for a plug and play application. Stay tuned!

Ok the last connector I need to source has proven hard to get ahold of as it supposedly is a OEM restricted item, meaning only Nissan can order the connector housings from the suppliers. I have been knocking on all the doors of the China suppliers that I have found in hopes that someone will answer the door.

Some hope for the 6 spd manual 4x4 guys, there is an adapter plate available for the 350z manual transmissions where it allows you to use a VK56 bellhousing I suspect it is possible to use on the VQ40 trans, so here is a link if anyone else wants to do some further investigating:

The guy I have been corresponding with on the swap has about a days worth of work before he's ready to start it up. He works a lot so he's not sure when he will be able to get another day to work on it, hopefully by the end of the week or so. He went with the Uprev NATS removal because of a few reasons like avoiding a tow bill and dealer charges plus the local dealership didn't really seem like they were on the same page as him whenn he talked to them about flashing the ecu. From what I have heard about dealerships is that some of them are mod friendly others are not. I am currently in the market to try and provide a remedy for this problem. As mentioned before I hope to try to provide a in house reflash cheaper and easier than having to tow it to the local dealer.

Here are some pictures he sent me of the engine in place:

As far as the conversion harnesses, they are already being made by me as we speak:

Ok it looks like this conversion jumper harness will cover all 05-12 Frontiers/Xterras/Pathfinders using a engine harness for 06-12 Titans. If you end up with a 04-05 Titan engine harness I can make the conversion harness for that aplication specifically by special order. 13+ Applications have yet to be determined but I am sure I can accommodate for those years too.

The total price will be $120 each. Now this was higher than I anticipated, but keep in mind I make each of these by hand, and at $120 each there is not much room (profit vs time) for a actual profit to be worth the trouble. There will obviously be a nice discount if there is enough interest to have a group buy.

In any case I will be holding back sales of the conversion harness till I have tried results which will be any day now as the forum member that I converted his harness for is completing the final steps of the swap.

I will also be offering a ECU flash service soon as I have purchased a Nissan consult and should be able to flash the Titan ECUs to work with our vehicles, if this works as it should I should be able to flash them for you so no towing to the dealership for a flash will be required. The jury is still out on whether or not the BCM and keys to our vehicle would need to accompany the ECU when doing so. I will keep everyone updated.

My Consult arrived in the mail today and it's freakin awesome. My dads Titan for some reason has been slow going into reverse. Normal generic code readers didn't show any codes transmission related, this not only gave me trans specific codes but it also gave me TPS readings and old codes that have come and gone. There is tons more to I am able to do but I wasn't able to mess with it too long. I went ahead and ordered the imobilizer card I need to reprogram keys and ecus. Next thing I need to do is find a ignition cylinder with nats antenna, titan frontier Xterra or pathfinder BCM, ECU and dash harness to make a mock up setup for flashing use.

More videos to come, he's been driving it for well over 100 miles now. Zero CELs (well he has 2 but we know why, his power steering sensor is broken so that's one code and the other is his fuel level sender that was present before the swap) he's supposed to send me more vids to post up! Harnesses are being assembled as we speak!

Hey guys I'm Brian the truck in the pics and videos is mine. It's running great and no codes other than an intermittent fuel sender code but I had that before swap. Sinisterfrontier06 did the harness conversion for me and has been a great help with the couple snags that I hit huge thanks goes out to him!!!! Any questions fire away.

So, I've thought about doing this swap, but what aftermarket parts like a supercharger are available? And what amount of power would they be good up to? I'm looking to do this with my 06 se in the future, and keep 4x4 and do a full Titan swap as far as axles and all. My question is, with doing the full swap, what's the mpg on it? And also, would towing bigger things be safer? Like a bigger boat then the frontier could pull with the vq40? Thanks in advance. Hoping someone can give me some insite on these few questions. And all in all, what did it cost for this build?::smile::

#73 · (Edited)
As far as aftermarket the vks have everything we do and then some. I don't recall if stillen still makes supercharger kits for them but I believe a smaller company has started making them with rotrex chargers. Mpg wise I get roughly 1 mpg less than I did with v6 in same conditions. (14 to 15 mpg). As far as towing I dunno? Does the v8 pathy have a higher tow capacity than the v6? Guess that'd be a good gauge. Oh and cost think it was roughly 3500 before I sold some of my old stuff.

Nah I need to quite being lazy and make an update vid or something. I have pacesetter long tubes no cats 2.5 inch exhaust after collectors it ys into one 3 inch pipe then into a delta flow muffler I forget the name basically a Flowmaster knock off then turn down right after the axle.
Thanks it's a lil Loud for my taste the video doesn't really convey it. Bee. Driving it daily ever since without problems
