Heavy vibration while stopped

I have a 2012 4wd Frontier with the V6 and auto trans. When im stopped either in park or drive, my truck vibrates severely. If you’re standing outside of the truck you can’t really tell it’s doing it. But sitting inside it’s a bit overwhelming. Has anyone else had this issue? What was the culprit? Any suggestions on locating the source? Thanks

Yes. Me! If you have the stock exhaust on your truck, I can give you some information on what the issue is.

I have a 2014 SV 4x4. Had this same vibration when I bought it used. Turned out to be the stock exhaust system vibrating at idle. Dealer looked up the tech service bulletins on it and there was one. They replaced a small section of the exhaust. The replacement section had yet another one of the beer can shaped counterweights that are welded to the exhaust in various places to tame the stock exhaust's vibration. It helped considerably, but I still was not satisfied.

I eventually added another exhaust hanger to spot that seemed to be vibrating the most. Bought an exhaust hanger from an auto parts store, modified it a bit, and found a good place on the frame to secure it to. That second effort on my part seemed to cure the bad vibrations. I still get a bit of it once in a while, but rarely, and it's WAY better than it used to be.

Where did you add the exhaust hanger. Was it to add support to the new section they added

Thanks for the information and quick response! I bought my truck used just under a year ago and it’s at 98k miles now. The vibration will fluctuate and sometimes isn’t there at all. However it’s present more often than not. I know the entire exhaust system is in pretty rough shape and I’ve had to replace a couple of the hangers due to rust. I may check into just putting all new exhaust on it. Though that’s not going to be cheap

I found a copy of the service bulletin in my paperwork for my truck.

The technical service bulletin is titled:
"2010-2015 Frontier & 2010 -2012 Pathfinder and Xterra; vibration while idling".

TSB Classification #: EC13-003b
TSB Reference #: NTB13-021b
Date: March 9, 2017

They replace the "center exhaust tube" with a new one that has another one of those dampers on it.

I'm going to post up a picture of where I added an additional exhaust hanger myself that really reduced the vibration significantly. It's on the left (driver's) side of the truck.

V6 Gen 2's stock exhaust from cat-back to Y-pipe is one cobbled-together collection of parts. At 93k miles, I'm super surprised mine is still quiet.

Unless you live in the desert, an aluminized steel aftermarket exhaust will only last a few years if in the salt belt. $tainless $teel FTW.

I used the CVTz50 app to increase my idle. I believe I settled on +75rpm. Vibration reduced by 95%. Was way easier for me than cobbling extra hangers on the exhaust.

Sidenote: the app also allows you to do a power balance test. Best to rule out a weak cylinder or misfire before chasing the symptoms.
