Full Air Intake vs Air Filter Throttle Body Spacer

Here is a link to my 22 Frontier builds.

2022 S AFE air intake-

Decent air intake, installed quickly. There is 1 bolt in the airbox in the back that is a PITA to install, I just had to have patience. I went with the oiled filter because I saw higher gains on there dyno sheet vs dry flow filter.

Overall I like it! I chose this one over the Z1 because of more the torque gain. This thing can be very noisy. The noise is most noted above 2.5K, with above 5K it screams. I do get the whistle at low speed at around 1.5K, but not obnoxious.

I did not notice any power differance till 2.5K and even then slight at best, just more noise. There was more noticeable power above 4K. For the $400 I do not know if it was worth it by itself to be honest. This was before I added my exhaust. Once I added my cat back exhaust things really came alive! But I am reviewing just the intake by itself for now. In fact it almost seemed like I may have lost a little bit down low with just the intake by itself with just more noise, but I have experienced this same thing before until I upgraded the exhaust.

Revs the same as before the intake. Everything idles the same no codes or any other issues.

No differance in MPG and truck does pull stronger mainly above 4K, again before exhaust was done.

2022 SV AFE TBS/K&N Air Filter

Wife does not like noise so for her truck I chose this setup. Please before anyone flames me over the TBS, I added it to help with atomizing air intake cleaner to help clean the deposits up on valves as more an maintenance item, and any power increase would be a plus.

Honestly as a solo mod, I like this setup better than the full intake, again this was before adding any other mods like exhaust.

I do have to note and I don't feel like taking everything apart for pics today, but there is a ring in the intake manifold with a seal between the manifold and throttle body. The top 1/2 is a mesh to direct airflow somehow from the top of the throttle plate. I take this thing out and cut out the plate square mesh pieces, then file the rest down and wipe it clean and reinstall it.

I did this so the airflow would not be blocked.

The truck revs much quicker with this setup verse the afe intake. Appears to idle a little smoother to.

No whistle or any funny noises at all. MPG went up close to 1 MPG. Pulls smooth and strong with no dead zones from idle to 6K.

Overall-

I am more in favor of the air filter/TBS vs the intake as a solo mod for sure. If anyone plans major upgrades then the intake would be a better choice.

I have full exhaust now on S model and SV now has a magnaflow muffler.

I like the setup of both, my S makes a decent bit more power now, but I had to add the exhaust to see more out of it.

SV model is still quite and better for a daily driver.

Anyone wanting a little extra without killing there wallet a good airfilter is a good choice. These truck pull the air from the outside the engine bay always.

I don't have any dyno to prove any claims here, but this is my honest and fair review of both setups in case anyone else is planning on doing any upgrades.

Not to rain hard on your parade, but IMHO, throttle body spacers do absolutely nothing. Only way you're going to convince me is back-to-back documented dyno pulls showing an advantage. An IMS, yes, for certain, increasing the runner lengths to the individual cylinders moves the torque curve downward, and usually decreases measured horsepower, as HP and torque are always equal at 5252 RPM.

Fair enough. There was a plastic mesh piece on the top part of the throttle body between the manifold I also cut out that I did not take pics of.

As far as a dyno the closest one is about 3 hours away or so.
