Frontier quality

All in all, i can't really complain my Frontiers have been solid trucks with truly only minor issues and normal wear and tear. And i think I only two maybe three recalls on all three trucks. I know the other makes can't say that for sure.

2007 Frontier CC SE 11 1/2 years 213,000 miles.
what went wrong
  • 50,000 timing chain guides under warranty
  • 75,000 LF window regulator
  • 125,000 LF ball joint
  • 130,000 brakes and RF ball joint
  • 150,000 fuel pump then 2 coil packs
  • 180,000 carrier bearing in drive shaft
  • 186,000 u-joints in drive shaft
  • 213,000 pinion gear because i did not change u-joints fast enough

2018 Frontier CC SV 3 1/2 years 62,000 miles
what went wrong
  • Nothing but note truck tires were screw magnets (seriously) every single tire had at least 2 - 3 patches
  • totaled when big Tahoe pulled left turn in front of me with one car length to stop

what went wrong
  • 15,000 roof gutter seal cracked away from metal fixed under warranty
  • 19,000 blew two fender dash speakers fixed under warranty
  • 20,000 defective center screen on dash fixed under warranty
  • 21,000 defective head unit fixed under warranty
  • 31,000 roof gutter paint cracking fixed under warranty
What have the rest of you experienced?
 
Had to have the rear window replaced under warranty in my 2018. Wasn’t sealed properly from the factory. Other than that, neither of my Frontiers has had any “build quality” issues. I’ve got ~140,000 miles between the two.
 
I've literally never had a noteworthy issue with any of my Nissans ever, all bought new.

My 2022 Frontier went to the dealer once for a new clockspring about 4 months into ownership, it was making a faint rubbing sound in very cold weather.

My 2015 Nismo RS has literally never had an issue, at 80k miles now, and I drive it pretty spiritedly as intended and it's liberally modded. It's put together so well and everything is overbuilt and solid. Such a good car.

My outgoing 2012 Xterra had to have the catalytic converter changed under warranty about 18 months into ownership. It's probably still on the road today.

My old 2007 Frontier never had any issues, radiator was changed after a deer strike to avoid SMOD. It's probably still on the road today.
 
Had a problem with the 7 pin wiring that took longer to resolve than it should have. Otherwise, only random door locking and an under dash noise possibly HVAC related. I've decided to just live with these. Initial quality seems about the same as the F150s I had previously.
 
I'm on my 4th rear window. The previous 3 had the slider and they all leaked. Dealer/Nissan finally caved in and gave me the solid one piece, which is what I wanted from the beginning.

Rear dif cover rusted out and got replaced under warranty.

I'm on my 3rd radio/head unit because the previous ones would reboot randomly and they had Bluetooth issues. The 3rd one is now having issues, too. Yesterday morning, the radio was dead. It had no power. I tried holding the power button to reset it, but it didn't work. When I put the truck in reverse, then the radio woke up. It's never done that before. That's a new glitch.

Back up camera got replaced under warranty.
 
Used 2017 I acquired:

Driver's side valve cover leaked at 27,000 miles. Replaced under warranty, kept leaking. I replaced it myself and it's fine now.

HVAC blower motor died at 30,000 miles. I installed a new one from AutoZone and works fine, if a bit loud compared to OEM.

Rear differential cover leaked at 27,000 miles. Replaced under warranty. Leaked again, replaced at my cost. Leaked again, I replaced it myself and it's fine now.

AC condensation duct got clogged at 30,000 miles and would spill water on the passenger foot well. I unclogged it myself and it's good now.

Edit: Forgot that I replaced the serpentine belt, tensioner, and idler pulley around 40,000 miles or something. It had been squealing and I think it was due to sloppy oil changes by dealer techs splashing oil all over the engine every time they changed the oil. Exact mileage is in a thread here somewhere

Consumables like batteries and tires don't get included.
 
'00 XE 4x2 2.4/5-sp manual bought used in '05 w/ 33K on it. Used as a work truck/daily driver hauling ~600lbs. Alternator went out around 45-50K miles. That was about it as far as any unscheduled maintenance until I sold it to a family member in '15 w/ 185K on it. Replaced the factory cat-back exhaust system for him at Midas as a kind gesture as I could occasionally detect a whiff in the cab. The muffler had some holes from corrosion, but was still quiet.
21-22 MPG consisting of 2/3 city and 1/3 interstate miles. Recorded 26 MPG once while doing a little over 80 mph the whole way.

'15 SV 4x2 4.0/6-sp manual factory ordered. Coolant thermostat went out at 38K which I had to replace on my dime due to being just barely out of warranty. That's it. Still on factory brakes at 112K - and it's also my work truck/daily driver that hauls ~600lbs of cargo most of the time.
17.5-17.7 MPG consisting of 2/3 city and 1/3 interstates miles. Achieved 21.7 MPG once while traveling 60-65 mph.
 
2014 Pro-4X currently at 257K. Only replaced the heater core inlet and outlet hoses due to broccoli. Everything else has been PMs. Did have a fairly sizeable rear diff cover leak that was fixed under warranty. Will be doing trans, transfer and front diff fluids this weekend.
 
My ‘20, purchased almost 4 years ago has only had basic maintenance, brakes, new tires, a battery and oil changes. I think it’s got 38,000 miles. Has had only the parking pawl recall fix. I would say this is one of the more reliable cars I’ve owned. My ‘17 Outback was as good. My ‘11 Forester had heavy oil usage that was common to that new engine that year. The 20/21 MY Frontiers missed out on the redesign for ‘22, so has fewer things to fail, is why I got this model.

2017 Pro-4x Crew Cab - 52,000 miles, bought in 2018 with 4000 miles. Was rebuilt title/theft recovery with only damage to front and rear bumpers.

35,000 miles: Replaced thermostat with OEM as it ran cool (185°F) and took a long time to warm up in winter. OEM replacement runs hotter (205°F) but still takes a while to warm in winter, just a 4.0L quirk.

45,000 miles: HVAC blower motor died in 100°F August. 🥵 Replaced with Amazon unit (fast shipping) and still working fine, like @AzureApe a little louder than OEM but ok.

47,000 miles: serpentine belt tensioner started squeaking and bearing felt rough-replaced it and the belt with Gates units.

All drivetrain oils changed at 32k. Tires at 34k. Zero other issues, been a fantastic truck.

What have the rest of you experienced?
picked up my 4th Frontier on Monday, a 2025 KC SV, gun metallic. still have the third one, a 2003 CC LB with more than 326,000 miles. Not a single major issue, not one, ever. my first Frontier was a 1999 KC. the second was another KC SE-V6. i expect this new one (the fourth one) to last another 20 years.
 
2011 SV King Cab 4.0 purchased new. Had to think a while before posting…nope. Nary a problem.
125k miles. Hell, the brake pads haven’t even been replaced. That’s crazy.
Routine maintenance, that’s all.
I come from 45 years in the automotive industry. 19yrs at independent auto parts store, 26yrs a parts advisor at Mercedes Benz. I've seen plenty of crap (not MBZ). These Frontiers are pretty much rock solid, though nothing is perfect.
I just bought a ‘25 SV King Cab and hope it’s as solid as my Gen 2.

EDIT: I just remembered, there were a few times I got the dreaded ABS/VDC/SLIP warning lights on the cluster. Mysteriously went on then just as mysteriously went off. Happened a couple of times a few years ago, but nothing since then (I’ve since sold the truck).
