Front Bumper Hole Solution

About a month back I removed the front air dam from my truck for better looks (to me). I was left with two holes under each side of the painted bumper revealed. I was going to buy some 8 mm trim plugs, but got to looking at my left over parts from the removal and I had 4 plastic plugs. These were not originally in these areas, but utilizing all the screws for the underside trim it freed these up. By themselves they do not sit flush with the bumper without the air dam.

I dug around my junk jar in my tool box and found some spacers from my entertainment center that I never used. Measured the inside opening at 8mm. They were too thick to use right from the bag, so I unpacked my Dremel tool and cut one in half. Slipped it on and it almost fit perfect. The outside diameter is approx. 17mm and after cutting the thickness was approx. 8mm.

I had to use a conical bit to open one side of the spacer up to about 9-10mm. It then slipped on the trim plug and seated with a little space to spare. Made the other three and figured let's give it a shot.

Went out to the truck and was able to push each left over plug to sit flush to the bumper with this spacer and now I have a slightly more finished look.

I wish I could say where to find a spacer like this, but if you have something along the lines of 8mm opening, 17mm in diameter, and 8mm thickness it will take up the slack needed behind the bumper for these to sit flush with the underside of the bumper.

Those are expansion rivets you are using.
Try using Xmas tree fasteners. They lie much flatter.
Maybe you might need a fender washer for backing, and a dab of silicone behind the head, but it's an easy fix with parts available at any auto parts store. If you don't like black, get matching touch-up paint to color the head.

Thanks for the suggestion. The local auto shop had packs of trim plugs the would have worked as you said. I figured take a look in my parts jar and see what I had and this seemed to work and I don't think it looks too bad (better then just holes).

With my color I wasn't concerned about color matching. I could see white another light color might want to go as small and painted as possible. Honestly the paint was pretty mangled around these holes after I removed the air dam. The larger rivets repurposed covered almost all the scrapes and bumps that were there.
