Time will tell if the newer engines have updated parts, but I think you are safe.
My friend has a 08 VQ40 Frontier, and it has over 110k, and so far the truck has held up well with no signs of timing chain issues. He is not easy on his truck either.

I was worried when I bought my 2012, but I want to believe they did what they needed to do so I took a chance.

 

Looks like some of the details in that article are overstated. It's hard to imagine it being a safety issue out of the blue. The warning signs would be present long before that happened. I had mine replaced under the powertrain warranty while my truck was having a engine oil pump replacement. I bought a 2006 Altima with the 3.5 V6 in July with 150,000 miles on it and it ran like new. The chains had never been replaced. It should not have happened for all of those years since Nissan had been producing award winning V6 engines before that time. Engineering should go forward and not backward.

The mechanics at the dealer gave me a lot of tips ( I exported the truck and thus lost warranty ) They advised me to use good brand synthetic oil and oem oil filters.
I did and ran 40K miles problem free, so good gamble
Although I am not impressed by the tiny Nissan Oil filter. Cut a few open and compared them with the alternative brands I can buy in EU. Anyway, since they're so cheap I change them frequently.

 

My timing chain cost me $1800 to replace at 71Kmiles. 1000 beyond what they came back and agreed to cover. They must have been using mine as the measuring point. Ialso paind to replace my fuel sending unit 1000 miles beyond the warranty and they wouldn't cover it. Then there is the flaking paint. Nissan said they saw no problems with the paint.

I'm not happy with Nissan's position on customer satisfaction when it comes to chronic issues they know about.

 

I think some of the 2010s had the timing chain issue, but I've not heard of any Frontiers beyond that with bad chains. Not sure why it took them 5 years to figure it out.
