Cold weather start up

When I start my truck in really cold weather all the gauges go into a strange mode where they vibrate and move to a negative position. This lasts for maybe 20 seconds then it goes back to normal. Anyone else notice this.

Have them check the alternator before you buy a new battery.
If the batt is new and the alternator isn't pushing at least 14.5v then its the alternator not the batt.

Ditto above. When we had our first freeze this winter, My gauges were doing that stuff and since my Navigation has a Voltage monitor I checked voltage while running (12.9v) and while on accessory (10.9v). Battery had 3 bad cells and 4th about to go. New battery, no issues.

Souns like a battery issue for sure. On the cheap go out pop the hood and have a good loook at the + terminal on the battery. They are 5hit from the factory and could be causing the problem. Check for corrosion (the white fluffy stuff) Go to your local parts place and get a new beefyer terminal anyways if you can the stock one will fail anyways.

It is a battery issue. Check and make sure your terminals are clean and tight. If the battery is going on 3 years old it is going to crap out on you soon. My gauges were doing what you describe last week. Dealer checked it and it was down over 150 amps on CCA power and it said it needed to be "recharged". They wouldn't warranty it yet, so I said hell with it and got a new 700 CCA battery from Advance Auto Parts for $66 and I have not had the "needle shake" issue since. It's been friggin cold here last couple days and the truck pops right off now. And the owner of the dealer where I bought my truck even admits Nissan batteries are 5h!t. Mine lasted 30 months and 25,000 miles.

Ok, I'll look into it. Strange though that it is a new truck and the voltage appears fine and cranks over fine in the coldest weather. I'll call my dealer, not that they're any good, on Monday.

Check the fluid level in the cells too. Pop the top off each side and the electrolyte should be to the bottom of the filler tube (not the top). If it's low, add distilled water (not tap). Directions are in the owner's manual.

The gauges do this themselves about a minute after you turn the key off after driving every time. It's kind of a built in reset procedure. It will also do this when the battery is disconnected and reconnected.

So, if it is doing it at startup, it means that your battery voltage is dropping very slow while the starter is turning... which like states above means the battery is not in a good charge state or is going bad/needs filled.

Sound like a battery issue, I had the same problem last Oct, the battery died on me after 7 months, it's like hassle, they replaced it, after I got stranged on the road two days after dealer recharged the battery, and they thought it only need charge. I hope you won't get into the same problem like I did, but just be prepare, get yourself some kinda jump starter or cable carry along, I know it's sound kinda funny when you have to carry with the new truck, just so you won't get stuck out there some places, and that even a pain on the butt. I had enought of this 5hit, drove me nut for the whole week, and wasted alot of time/gas driving to the dealer. I told the dealer I didn't appreaciated all this happended to me, when their stupid batter tester told them it's still good, but turned out it got a bad cell, cause me stuck on the road, Since it's still under warranty, or else I would a good darn battery. If you ever run into this same thing, and they will not replace it on the 1st visit, you can kill the battery yourself, by given it four crank in one shoot, but don't let the engine turn over, this will kill it instantly when it got the same symtom like this, I learned this from a cousin mechanic, he used to work for Nissan, Toyo, Mercede and now Lexus, he said an experienced mechanic should took this route to get the battery replace for the customer when the battery had a problem less than a year, since the test shown it still good, but it can be death at later time with bad cells, so he has a reason to replace it. This will avoid the customer from getting stranged out there. Well goodluck, hope you get it resolve soon.

Sorry it's my error, I had a similar issue right before Thankgiving, I took the 1st visitted to the dealer, and been told that the battery was fine, all they did was just gave it a full charged, and unable to replicate the problem that I've stated, even I left my truck there over night, then two day later I got stranged on the road, because of a bad battery, I found me a jumped, then went to the dealer that night, they replaced it, and claimmed that it got a bad cell, what a hassle, then I told my cousin about the problem, he said I should just give it a quick crank four times, but don't let it turn over, that should made it death completely, then they will replace the darn things, save me many trips, sorry again that I got you confused. I hope you won't run into the same problem like I did.

I never had this issue but I think my battery had/has problems since it was new. I took this maintainer out of a car that I sold and decided to check my Fronty battery. I took a voltage reading at -8°C and it was only 12.36v, only 75% charged. This was odd because I had just got back from a 10hr trip and it should have been fully charged. I put my charger on it and it took 16hrs to do its thing. This seemed like a very long time for a new battery but it could be some of the trucks electronics affected it. The battery seems to be ok now? Holds its charge just fine. Also my start up rattle has not occurred since I charged it! Maybe they come from the factory not fully charged and need a little help to get going, or there is some kind of issue with the trucks charging system. When it warms up a little here I will check the water level as that is something I did not do.

What a great place for info. I booked an appointment for next week to have it checked out. My dealer isn't the greatest so I suspect they will try to sweep it under the rug.
