If I were going to do the mod where I can turn the cargo lights off with the switch (and they stay off), I'd like to see more pics, up close.

Does anybody have any to share on this?

It would be good to have before messing with any wiring so I can know I'm doing the right thing for this mod
When your door is open & your cargo lights are on....if you want them off...just flip the cargo light switch ON then back OFF...& they will go off.....no mod needed

Yes, I read about that - but, I'd like for them to just stay off all the time

Then hit the on switch if I wanted them to come on.

From what I've been reading, the way it's setup from the factory is you can turn them off - but next time you open they door they come back on again.

Correct.
What I didnt like is when you unlock the doors they come on. I was going to do the same as you "pull the bulbs or do the mod"...but I got a shell so now I want to keep those functions inside my shell... I just extended the wires from the cab unit to my shell's cargo & 3rd brake.
Now I can get a peek inside my bed when I unlock/walk up on it at night & can still flip the switch to turn it off when doors are open

Reviving a really old thread...

has anyone done this in newer models? I’ve got a 2016 and I’m am attempting to do this but cutting the grey and pink wires isn’t working for me. I’ve tried hooking them up every which way and can’t get the cargo lights to not come on when opening the doors.

pic of the wires I’m trying.

Just remove the bulbs from the cargo light. Access the screws under the headliner near rhe back window. The little round plastic caps come out of the headliner to reveal 2 screws for the third brake light. Remove the bulbs for the cargo light and put it back together. The bulbs will be burning hot.

Appreciate the input, but that goes against what I’m trying to do here.

I did something different to keep the cargo light from coming on all the time — just installed a local cutoff switch: What have you done for your Frontier today/lately?

That looks really clean, do you have a right up on it or anymore info you could share?
All I did was remove the nuts holding the third brake light on so that I could access the wiring on the back, then spliced in the switch (soldered and heat shrink) on the ground wire to interrupt the circuit. Run the wire in a loom to reach the cap that covers the access to the brake light, cut/drill a hole in that plastic cap and mount the switch.

Sounds easy enough. If I can't get this figured out then at least I'll have a plan b. Thanks.

So, the wiring for the bed light is separated from the brake light wiring?

Did you take an pics of the wiring to be able to post that?

I won't mind doing this mod and run the wiring all the way to my dash

Did you ever get this worked out? Looking to do "the mod" as well so I can control the cargo light switch on/off anytime like a normal light switch (without the door triggering it). ??
So I definitely attempted it, however, it didn't work the way it was supposed too. It ended up just making the lights not work at all. I was in a time crunch and ended up just throwing it back together rather than actually figuring it out. I have a few more things that I need to pull the dash again to complete so I do plan on going back at it, I just haven't done it yet. As soon as this heat breaks a little (September maybe?) I'll probably pull it back apart again, I'd like to have it corrected before an event that I do in October.

I know a company out there makes a wiring harness for the Silverados to bypass the cargo switch "safety" features and make the switch just that...a switch. But I haven't seen proven documentation on this mod yet. Some here with older model Frontiers have luck, others not so much. ?? Thanks for responding either way. I'll still do my research ;)

Pin1 of the cargo lamp relay is connected to pin 50 of the BCM. If you cut the wire at pin 50 and then at pin 31, which is the cargo lamp rocker switch ground input to the BCM, then solder the cut wire from the switch side to the cut wire from pin 1 of the cargo relay, the switch will be just that, only a switch.
But be mindful that if you leave the cargo lamps on accidentally, it will drain the battery as the BCM battery tender function will now be bypassed completely. The BCM wire at pin 50 is P: Pink ( for 2016 at least ), and pin 31 is GR: Gray.
Be real sure to tape up very well, the cut sides left over from the BCM, you don't want them touching anything with battery voltage or chassis ground.

Thanks Ryan. When I get a chance I will check if this is the same with the 22's. I don't mind it staying on... if I leave it on, and I usually check my vehicle when I lock it up anyways. I came from vehicles that didn't have the battery tender features, so if you left that inside dome light on overnight, you needed a jump in the morning :sneaky:
But I appreciate the info either way (y) I'm sure others will give their two cents soon too.

LOL, yeah, I think every one but my last couple had no battery tender either, so yeah, the forgotten dome lamp burned me a coupla times as well. Isn't technology great?
