2007 2wd 4cyl. About a month ago, started to get a rattle at about 2k rpms. Interestingly, it only does this when the engine is cold; I do not hear the rattle after driving for about 10 minutes. It seems like it's coming from about the area of my feet and maybe towards the passenger side, maybe in the center; but almost certainly not up front from the engine.

Any thoughts? Keep in mind that in automotive terms, I'm a neophyte. If a truck was made of wood, I'd always know how to fix it. But engines, exhuast, etc., kinda mystify me.

Thanks.

heat shields. I took my truck in because I was SURE that either my belt tensioner pulley needed to be replaced (again) or I had the dreaded timing chain guide problem due to the whining that was seemingly coming from under the hood. I also had a nasty rattle at ~2k but not all the time.

dropped the truck off last night, got a call at 730 this morning telling me that they suspected it was the heat shields (which I had made a failed attempt at securing previously with some mechanics wire). and asking me if I wanted them to go ahead and fix the problem. I told them to go ahead and then make sure that that was in fact the problem. got another call at noon telling me it was done. picked it up and no rattles or whines so far...

Thanks guys. Let me ask the next obvious question (getting back to that neophyte thing).

So other than the obnoxiousness of the rattle, how much do I need to care? Will they break or fall off? And if they do, what could happen? Is it something a mechanical noob like me could find and tighten or is it best to leave to a technician? Thoughts on what the cost might be?

Thanks!
