Okay, the SLIP and ABS lights are still on and now I cannot get her to go into four-wheel drive. The four-wheel drive indicator flashes the front wheels but it never engages. I would rather not have to go to the stealership shop if I can. I did trace the ABS wire back from the wheel that I took off when I replaced the alternator and they look fine, at least to me, it is attached at least. I did disconnect the battery and performed the reset procedure for steering alignment but to no avail, the lights are still on, it has been over two weeks. Bucks are tight right now but do not want to bugger anything up, if that is possible with those lights still on. Any ideas for me to try before I have to give in and be presented with a large bill from Nissan?

a) search

b)If you had done a search you could have seen that if you have the ABS light and SLIP light on you have an error in the ABS system and you can not shift in the 4wd. To solve this you can 1) fix the ABS problem 2) pull the ABS fuse and shift from 2wd to 4wd from a dead stop.

the computer uses the ABS to match the speed of the front and rear wheels so you can shift to 4wd on the fly. If there is bad data it will not shift in to 4wd to keep you from grinding gears.

Alrighty then, I am off to the garage to perform the test. I will let you know how it turns out. BTW I had a post regarding the SLIP and ABS and had not heard anything about that, at least with regards to my post. Also, was not sure how to word it for a search....., I tried four-wheel drive and SLIP and ABS but got everything except what I wanted to know. Thanks in advance, okay, here I go.

also you need to drive the truck for atleast a block or 2 for the abs to reset after you pull the fuse or check the sensors

i assume when you said youve had the problem for more than 2 weeks you had been driving it

I stand corrected, sorry about that! The tip on driving it to reset it is nice to know, but, before I do, I just pulled the fuse and the ABS and SLIP and 4WD and BRAKE lights were all lit, and one more thing, the little window that shows the truck with turned front wheels was not not visible, it did not even show up. Maybe I will wait to hear from someone before I take her for a ride.

if you pull the ABS fuse, you lose all ABS data, and the 4wd indicator. So no speedo ether. I made the ABS bypass mod. http://www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f23/abs-shut-off-switch-auto-frontier-52816/ and you can turn the ABS system off shift in to 4wd or 2wd, then turn it back on. and you will have the speedo data. Also if have one broken ABS line you will lose ABS..

you need to put the fuse and abs sensor back in , with out the fuse you will not have the 4x4 window

try pulling all the sensors out and cleaning them and put them back in then take a drive if you still have the slip light on you have a bad sensor and need to get it replaced

Got it, thanks guys. Project for a rainy day, and believe me, we have had a few lately. I like the write up with pics, wow.
Going fishing tomorrow and there is a boat ramp that requires four-wheel drive, guess I will pull the fuse, shift into four wheel drive, pull the boat out, switch back to two-wheel drive and replace the fuse. Come on rainy day.....

One more thing, where exactly is the sensor located?

you dont even have to pull the fuse to do that , turn the truck off when you get to the loading ramp turn it back on and switch into 4wd as soon as you turn the truck on , when your done with 4wd turn the truck off turn it back on and switch back into 2wd

again that is only a temporary solution

Maybe a dumb question, but, does the fuse have to be out in order to do that? I am way into the game right now so checking posts at convenient commercial breaks, along with cooking deer bratwursts for friends. Thanks guys.

Okay, the beer and brats are getting to me, I just re-read the previous post....hello.. I went out and tried that but it still flashes and does not go into four HI or four LO when I turn the switch when it is off or on. I tell you what, let me investigate a little more and get back to you guys. Thanks for putting up with me....

Okay, a little history. My alternator went bad and I replaced it about one month ago using the method I learned in this site which involved removing the front right tire. I replaced the alternator (and disconnected the battery), put the wheel back on and all was fine for, as far as I recall, the first few days. Then the ABS SLIP lights came on. I must have driven for more then ten minutes as mentioned in the manual for a reset because the lights went out for a day then came back on and have been on ever since. Like I said it has been at least two weeks of short trips lately, less then ten minutes per drive, I live in town and drive maybe five miles max which is equivalent to maybe eight minutes. I did take her out a day or two ago for what was at least forty minutes of driving and the lights stayed on. Today the weather was really nice and I power sprayed my truck and noticed an unusually large amount of dirt and black stuff coming from the right front tire, the one I removed. I have not driven the ten minute reset procedure since I gave her a really good wash but intend to tomorrow when I will be in my car for two-hours straight. I may go out tonight and give it a try but the company might frown on that. I am planning on stopping at a Les Schwab and having my tires rotated at 0800 tomorrow before the trip so maybe that will be a better test.

And I just completed the starting and engaging the four wheel drive, and no matter how fast I engaged the switch after starting it will not engage, or at least show that it is in four wheel drive.

ok. I think your new alternator is causing the ABS light to come on. Replace the ALT.

actually what I found that worked is turn the truck off, switch into 4hi (or 4lo) turn the truck on.

The truck will start in any of the 3 switch setttings but with the abs light on it will not switch out of that settings. So when done with 4hi, turn truck off, switch into 2wd, turn truck on.

oh yes, and leave the fuse in place through all of this.

Sounds great, guess I will go out and try that method making sure I am not on too steep a hill that I cannot get out! I know that when in four-wheel drive on level pavement the front wheels kind of 'grab' and 'lurch' a little.

Here I go.

Okay, that did not work. I know it did not go into four-wheel drive. I use it a lot around here and it did not engage. Any more thoughts or is it off to the stealership garage?
