Why are the shocks on the rear suspension facing different directions?

I was looking at it the other day wondering what the significance would be. There must be a reason they did it that way, but I can't think of why. It can't be because of space, it seems like there's plenty under there.

When installing aftermarket shocks, or when upgrading to, say a 10 leaf pack and some coil-overs, do you mount those shocks opposing as well? When I see super high performance trucks, it seems like everything is symmetrical.

I'm no pro at it, but to me it seem that it doesn't matter just as long as they are both angled the same. The pressure will be the same.

I'm not sure either... I always thought it was because it allowed the rear suspension to stabilize itself a bit more. Having them pointed different might allow them to take compression a little different as well...(loads applied from different directions) Or maybe it helps with torsional stresses...

I dunno. Someone smart pipe up... I've always wondered too.
