Hey, guys. I have a 2015 SV 4x4 with ~19,000 miles, and I have two issues I'm trying to get resolved:

1. The keyhole lock on the tailgate is loose, and it doesn't work smoothly. Actually, it's always been loose, but didn't notice until I drove it off the lot. It does work, but on top of being loose, it's annoying because you have to kinda turn the key back and forth a couple of times before it "catches" to unlock the thing.

2. A recent battery issue, which concerns me. I noticed day before yesterday that the positive terminal on my battery had an EXCESSIVE amount of corrosion on it--about half white half brown, in case that means anything to anyone. Now, I've been around cars my whole life, and I maintain and fix nearly everything on our three vehicles--2014 Versa, 1990 5.0 Mustang, and the truck--so I do know what I'm talking about when I say this is excessive corrosion, particularly because I do do maintenance on the battery every few months: battery cleaner, flush with distilled water, and spray the red corrosion prevention stuff that comes in the little aerosol can. So I blasted it with 3 or 4 rounds of foamy terminal cleaner and water. I then tried taking the positive clamp off the terminal, but I couldn't get it to budge after loosening the screw. I'm not sure if the thing has welded itself to the terminal, or if it's kinda sorta seized up with rust (the screw and clamp has significant rust). I don't know what's causing this all of a sudden, but it is alarming.

So I call the local Nissan dealer and talk to service and the woman tells me that, in all likelihood, NEITHER of the items above will be covered under warranty. She said I'd have to PROVE the keyhole thing was a factory defect (how the $h1t would anyone be able to do that after driving it off the lot!?), and she said the battery corrosion is "normal," so they wouldn't do anything about that either despite my explaining to her that I didn't just fall off the turnip truck when it comes to automobiles, and it is most certainly NOT normal given what I said above. It seemed like she basically didn't take me seriously and wanted to "prove" she knew more than me about cars, which I could care less if that's the case or not. Anyway, just one of those types of people. I suspect she also might have been trying to dissuade me from bringing the truck in for service, but I haven't a clue why because they get paid by Nissan all the same. I digress... just venting a bit now.

I have gotten the runaround once before from these clowns, so I last time I called Nissan HQ, and they assured me they'd contact X dealership to make sure they'd take care of me. So I get into X dealership, and apparently lines got crossed somewhere because they STILL tried to deny service--EASY-a$$ service. It did finally got resolved after much wasted time and energy. Anyway, I'm thinking I'll have to call HQ again and tell them to make dang sure X dealership takes care of me without the drama this time!

Has anyone else ever had such issues with either:

-Battery?

-Warranty?

Thanks for your feedback and advice.::smile::

I was on the last day of my bumper to bumper warranty. My battery was also corroded. I actually brought it in because some lights lit up on my dash including my check engine light. My dealer swapped out the battery for a new one, reset my computer and I have been trouble free ever since. I did not have to call corporate or do anything.

The corroding battery is very common. Which battery did you get? I got part number 999M1-NC24F which is 700CCA. This was not the same battery that came out of my truck. So far no sign of corrosion yet.

Does the lock actually move inside the tailgate? If it does, you can pop off the access panel and tighten up this bolt. It will take you 5 minutes.

Battery corrosion is common. Do you off road at all? I upgraded to a sealed battery.

To answer the other part of your question, I had far bigger items than what you are describing covered under warranty. I had to fight a little for one of them. My warranty repairs took place between 2010 and 2011, so it was a while ago.

The corrosion is caused by small amounts of electrolyte leaking around the battery post.

The quality of the seal around the battery post varies among different batteries - Some do a better job of sealing in the electrolyte than others. As JeniorNV alluded, sealed batteries have the best-sealed posts, because they HAVE to be sealed in order to keep the battery from losing all its electrolyte over time.

Mishanding the battery (hammering on the posts or lifting the battery by its posts) can also damage the post seals.

I wouldn't bother going to the dealership for either of these issues, the loose lock
would take less time to fix than the drive to the dealer. And the OEM battery, like
the OEM windshield wipers, is mediocre at best so should be replaced with something
better.

I don't know how you could be having all that trouble with your terminals, especially
if you maintain them as well as you say, but.... that's another story I guess.

But I guess this is a matter of principal to you. So I'd say go in and make it clear
that you're unhappy with their attitude and insist that the manager explain to you
why they won't honor the warranty. If you're not satisfied with his explanation, then
file a complaint with Nissan.

Pull that battery as soon as possible and replace it with an AGM battery after cleaning the terminals. I had my ECM get fried by this issue but luckily, I had a good relationship with my service mgr and he replaced it.... even after Nissan said not to. The repair would have cost me $3500!

See the thread in my signature for more info. I highly recommend Odyssey batteries.

On any new vehicle I immediately pull the cables and put those felt rings on the posts and use the terminal spray on the exposed contacts and even when my 2010 had 120,000 on trade in @ 7 years old had zero corrosion.
If your under your 3 year 36,000 mile warranty then they have to fix the lock.
Call Nissan again.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I haven't messed with either issue myself because I figured, "hey, why not take advantage of the warranty?," but given y'alls advice on how easy the lock is to fix and that the OEM batteries are crap anyway, I'll just go ahead and take care of the issues myself. It's not worth the hassle of dealing with the clowns. Haha.

Thanks again!

Don't mean to hijack OP's thread but I am having a similar issue with the positive battery terminal.

A couple of weeks ago started my truck and went off to an appointment. An hour later I come back out and get in my truck and tick-tick-tick-tick... wouldn't start. Tried a couple of times and no joy. Pop the hood and I see after lifting the hood of the + terminal that it looks like a blooming onion.

Called my wife cuz she was closer than AAA would be and jumped it and drove home. This was the OEM battery in my 2012 so I just figured that it had a good run and finally died. No biggy, went and got an AGM battery from a local auto parts store. Cleaned the + terminal as best I could and put in the new battery and put the charger on it to make sure it was fully charged.

A couple days later had a Dr. appointment, truck started fine. An our later after the appt. get in the truck and... tick-tick-tick-tick... Tried a couple of times and no joy. Called my wife cuz she is closer than AAA (why do I even pay for AAA :) ). After I called her I popped the hood and lifted up the + terminal cover and I see a bit of fresh powder. Wiggled both terminals to make sure that I had snugged them up sufficiently when I installed the new battery. They were snug.

Got back in the truck and, on a whim I tried to start it one more time. Fired right up!

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I go out to go somewhere this afternoon and ... tick-tick-tick-tick...

Well....damn.

Pop the hood and lift the + terminal cover and quite a bit of fresh powder. Bummer.

Have the charger on it now and hopefully I can get it started tomorrow.

So...I have a new AGM battery with powder forming around the + terminal andI'm wondering if perhaps the problem might be in the electrical system, or is the ECU fubar'd and messing up the electrical/battery circuit.

I did notice after putting in the new battery that the dash lights/displays were a little weird but was thinking that they would sort themselves out after driving it a few miles - which they seemed to do.

My 5 year old truck is not a daily driver and only has 5K miles on it so I sure hope this isn't going to be a multi-thousand dollar event.

I'll find out soon enough. :)

Maybe the terminal absorbed a little acid and it's leaching out now. Try neutralizing it with some... maybe backing soda?

I believe the AGM battery is sealed so that shouldn't cause any "powdering".

A volt meter to make sure it's charging might be good too.

^^^The good news is that replacing the battery post clamp is cheap and easy.

You can get some terminal spray at any auto parts store to coat it. It's a varnish like coating that
works pretty good.

Like I said in an earlier post, you need to soak the terminal in something to neutralize the battery
acid first.

This should help. I have a '12 and right after I bought the truck I smeared Dielectric Grease on the outside of both terminals and clamps. I had read of the corrosion issues and didn't want any problems. 5 years later I have the same battery with zero signs of any corrosion forming.

I believe the venting on the factory battery is near the terminal as well, contributing to the corrosion. I have tried everything short of fully sealing the terminal area and still get corrosion (more than normal).

Threw in a new optima battery and terminal and it has been clean since... Obviously a design issue, but good luck getting Nissan to admit it.
