I'm interested in knowing what choices people have made for off road wheel size and how they decided. And particularly if those that have lifted their trucks or modified suspension components went to a larger wheel or just with a different tire size. If looks and/or street performance weren't factors, what would you choose?

I'm a fan of this:

18" wheels w/35" tires
17" wheels w/33" tires
16 or 15" wheels w/32" tires

max wheel size is 18" for me

For most price is the deciding factor. The larger the rim, the more expensive the tire. I would venture to say that 15 and 16 are the cheapest. 17s are used the most in prerunning and other high speed wheeling while 18s plus are used for mall crawlers. That is my take on the situation.

I'm going back to 15's. 16 inch tires are pricey. those that wheel with 18's are...well they dont actually wheel...or they wouldnt be running 18s.

plus, there is always weight. most people dont understand rotating mass...but my current whee/tire combo is over 95lbs a corner, stock was 56lbs a corner. thats a huge difference I'm planning on rectifying

i run 16" rims with my 34" tires. works pretty nice. Just clear my calipers....othewise I'd go smaller. anything bigger is too expensive...18" is for mall crawlers...the more rubber the better... (that's what she said)

I ended up going with 16" wheels and 265 70
This turns out to be better for the 4cyl and power plus handling.
The 33's were also killing my front hub assemblies.
went through three...
I'm sure that has something to do with what inyourface is talking about rotating mass.

Id like to have 15s because the tires are cheap and you get more sidewall, however 16s are cool because you get taller tires that are narrower which I like.

15'' steelies are the way to go.

However, in these days, its seems most wheels are 16'', so the tire selection and price is coming down to 15'' size, like it was back in the day.

More tire and less rubber is the way to go, as most have said.

yeah you get into the opposite problem there - too much rubber and sidewall.
Tell that to big time crawlers that can't be DD and are trailered everywhere. They all run 15'' 's. Its not like you will puncture the 10 ply side wall or break the beads.

Too much rubber is not bad....

Except for handling, tire wear, safety etc. I'm talking DD's. and most the big guys run 16.5's on 8bolt lugs anyway.

Even with the 10 ply (or greater i think), the handling is really bad. DD's is not good news on that size rim at all, cornering is terrible.

16" on this truck is good but if you want to run 35" tires or bigger you may need to go to 17"
