What do you want a scanner for? I just use a radio shack hand held, works fine for what I need it for

Yup, Northvale NJ. Volunteer FD. I got quite a few blue lights in my truck lol. You a NJ FF?

skierdude, might I recomend if you are doin you're truck up with lights, stay away from strobes, that includes hide-aways and dash lights. They draw a lot of power, and aren't really that bright. Go with LED's. Whelen actually just came out with a few nice LED hide-away options.

I say handheld. You could always get a speaker for your truck later on. But at least with a handheld you could take it with you on a call. Or just get a 2 way radio, that way not only can you use it on calls to comunicate, you can just put it on scan

I've been looking at getting a 800mhz scanner too, just not sure to go big for the truck or a hand one that I can take around. I use my mounted VHF Icom IC-521 for all the SAR stuff, just want 800mhz to listen in.
BTW just got my optima Yellow-top in. Hopefully I can run all the lights and radio for awhile w/o worrying about not starting up. Has only happened once, when someone had an inverted plugged in for a laptop - to program the Icom incidentally.
