So I have a 2015 sv cc with 40k miles.. it has a power steering leak under the front driver side. I see its coming out from the rack and pinion boot. Was just going to replace it on my own but decided to call the nissan dealership to see if they could cover it since its not normal for it to be damaged so soon. The person I spoke to tells me to come in and he will personally help me.. skip the service center and just talk to him first.. He tells me I'm out of warranty by 4000 miles and by 2 months. Tells me he will gift the rack and I just pay 3 hours labor.. I agree and go in.
When I get there he tells me it was inspected and I need a new rack.. but they will only cover $1000... I must cover the $250 additional that the rack costs. ($1250). Then he tells me its not 3 hours labor ($390).. it is now 5 hours labor ($650).. on top of that its $130 to have the part delivered overnight $140 for a wheel alignment.. $180 for a power steering fluid flush ( hahah ).. so what was $450 is now $1350. I said no thank you and left.
I stop to get gas and look under the truck and the Bounty paper towel I tied around the boot is still there.. the same retaining clips are still there.. the dirt and dust is undisturbed... THEY NEVER EVEN INSPECTED THE TRUCK!!!!
I asked the service manager to put me in contact with the nissan rep who covers that dealership and he just told me it would not help because I am out of warranty.. and dismissed me.
I called NISSAN and am in contact with their Consumer Affairs Dept and they tell me that the dealer I went to has no record of my car being looked at. And that if I hope to have Nissan cover it then I need to go have a diagnostic of whats wrong and that will cost me an hour labor.

Im more than upset and just wanted to rant

Yeah, they were trying to slip you the big green weenie on that one. The guy was right though in that full list retail for the racks is $1250 but I guarantee their wholesales cost is almost half that.

Rockauto sell new OEM Hitachi racks for $530. I would go that route and do it yourself. Throw in some new tie rod ends since you are in there, plus some PS fluid and alignment afterwards and you can be under $700 for the job. Could go couple hundred cheaper with a rebuild rack but with such a complicated job, I would not risk it to have to do twice if you get a bad rebuild.

I don't get it.
You paid nothing, got a estimate for a repair that you declined, and are upset they didn't fix your truck??

You do understand that the boot on the rack (bellows boot), is simply a dust boot and does not seal oil, if you have a ps leak there, the seal inside the rack has failed and the rack needs replacement right?
No need to remove anything, only visual inspection required.

That is a over simplification. He was told one thing and agreed to a quote and they tried to change it to a higher price based on a claimed inspection the OP later determined they never did.

Not really, an estimate over the phone is not a signed agreement, it's a ballpark cost. They provided him with the actual cost once it was determined, no loss or gain for anyone.
Over simplification?? That's what happened! It's not like they did the repairs and then jacked the price up! He was notified prior to any charges.
The inspection was done, op is ignorant/uneducated on cars and doesn't understand what a free/visual inspection is.

Are we all reading and responding to the same issue? Some replies appear as they didn’t follow the whole story. Years ago I PAID to have lower ball joints replaced and after going home looked under the car and it wa NEVER done so they took my money and did nothing. Yes, there are real scum bags out there. I got my ball joints and wheel alignment and the owner refunded half the money too.
Nissan may good will part of the repair., good luck.

This is why dealers are called stealerships, they didn't do a single thing wrong, but everyone is jumping on them like they're Kevin spacey.
You get bad mechanics everywhere, this is not a example of that.

Dealers do not FIX...they replace parts. They do attempt to cover their azz (and up profit of course) so you won't be bringing it back in IE PS fluid flush, etc...

A GOOD mechanic who knows their craft CAN fix issues and will replace needed parts. They will also attempt to cover their azz so they won't need to see the vehicle again IE they may possibly want to perform the PS fluid flush/replacement as well.

Good luck w/ troubleshooting and repairs.

So they're are no mechanics at dealerships?
I'm pretty sure the dealers are where the "mechanics" send the cars they can't figure out/diagnose properly.

Perfect example of internet badmouthing, based on no fact whatsoever. Hilarious.

Who was this person you spoke with that said despite being out of warranty that he would "gift" you the rack, a service tech, janitor or service manager?

On this assessment I agree... Visual inspection revealed where the leak in coming from...

ha... definitely not ignorant when it comes to cars and trucks. but I dont need to prove that point. I understand the point of the boot. Also when the service managers says we will replace your part for x dollars and then when you get there he says its x = $1500... that is the issue. I know its not a contract... hence why no work and no money was exchanged.

for everybody else... I went to another dealership.. Nissan gifted me the part and it was done and out the door for $500 ... that included wheel alignment and "power steering flush" lol

and in happier news... I traded it in and got an 18 chevy colorado z71 ::wink::
