G'day everyone. I'm looking for some advice, perhaps someone else has already done what I'm looking to do.

I want to do a full interior upgrade of my 1998 Dual Cab D22 Navara, but mostly focusing on the dash. My primary issue is I have the style of dash that places the din mounts at the bottom (approx 1997-1999), while the other variant (approx 1998-present) places the din mounts right at the top. I know if I could get my hands on a new style dash from a pre-2001 D22, it should be a straight swap. However, sourcing a donor is proving difficult. I have, however, found a 2006(ish) D22 donor; though I'm unsure if it will be as straightforward as an older model. I'm certain installing the new instrument cluster will be a bit of a headache.

Has anybody done this before? How well did it work, and were any modifications necessary to install? How difficult was it to wire in the new instrument cluster?

Attached pics are what I currently have, and what I want to upgrade to.

Fwiw, our Nissan Frontiers substantially changed from Gen 1 to Gen 2 between model years '04 & '05. I've owned both and would consider a swap-mod to be daunting.

I've also owned both the D22 and D40 Frontiers. 2nd Generation Frontiers are a bit wider than 1st Generations, so you'd probably have overhang and an inability to close the doors if you tried to swap the dashes....

Your '98 dash looks substantially like the D21 dash that was in my '95 Hardbody, albeit right hand drive. I'm going to hazard a guess that everything rearward of the firewall has been changed to that second picture. My D21 didn't have airbags and it doesn't look like your '98 does either but the newer style does, plus the HVAC ducts are obviously in different places through the middle, and the lengths of the various wiring harness ends won't be the same to reach all of the controls and the radio.

It's possible that the dash cluster and HVAC controls have the same wiring harness connectors but it's not assured, and it's not even assured that they're driven with the same voltages, and I'd probably look at forums more specifically dedicated to the Navara. The American D22 Frontier's interior was revised in a different direction than the rest of the international market, so it's likely that even those with experience with the Frontier might not be able to help you as much as you need. If I remember right, the '04 D22 Frontier I looked at possibly buying had a layout more like what my Hardbody had, rather than the radio-on-top layout that the 2006 D22 or the 2005+ D40 has.
