Does any one know where to get a good 5 speed auto transition that would fit a 2002 XE Fronty, i currently have a 3 speed ( with auto OD ) but i would like one that has more gears than just 3 pretty much, Thanks ( and don't worry if it is not capable of towing, i don't tow anyways

You're not going to find a 5 speed automatic transmission easy. Going to be the 4 speed automatic, or the 5 speed manual typically. You can convert it to a manual, but it'll be an extensive process. Like Mathster said, easiest way is to sell the truck and get a second generation with the 5 speed automatic or the 6 speed manual.

The other thing to consider is with our 3.3L engine, it runs most efficiently around 3000 RPMS.
More gears is to either get a higher ratio overdrive or a lower ratio first.
Personally, I think our automatic is a pretty good mix. First is low enough to get moving with a good load. OD is about right for cruising at 70mph.
My only complaint is the truck likes second gear too much. When you pass, the truck kicks down to second (you see two tach drops going back to cruising speed). It also seems that the torque converter doesn't stay locked up like it should.

There were no 5-speed autos produced that directly bolt to a VG block. Yours is a 4-speed (OD counts!).

The big question is what are you trying to achieve by getting one more gear in your transmission?
well really to increase top speed, which topping out at 95 isn't bad( because where legally can you go that fast ) I would like to be able to make it more of a street truck rather than a towing truck. because i can use a F-250 if I need to tow. the engine can handle going faster than 95 i can feel it when it switches to OD but i guess the govern kicks in

So your asking for the wrong thing.

a 5 speed auto or manual would have a similar ratio top end gear anyway. So what your really looking to do is remove the speed limiter. Even my pathfinder is only turning 3k at 85MPH (indicated) and has plenty of RPM's left.

we have 4 speed auto's btw....O/D is a gear.

t also seems that the torque converter doesn't stay locked up like it should.
torque converter will lock up if you get off the throttle. its a bit tricky, but it keeps it unlocked because your asking to much throttle, so it wants the extra 2-300 RPMs for the power.

I find on mine I have to let off completely on the throttle, so it drops to 4th and locks the converter and then slowly get back on the throttle. I can get it all the way up to the kickdown switch with the T/Q locked.

Okay then i suppose i asked the wrong question then.
Any one know how to get a higher top speed on the Frontier ?
in short, there is nothing you can do.

your truck is governed by the computer at 95mph. there is nothing you can do to lift the speed governor.

i have 35's and 5.13 gears in my rear diff. i could probably hit about 102 mph before the computer thinks i'm going 95. i wouldn't dare attempt it though, i don't want to die.

Okay, well thanks. Now I know it is because of the transmition governing the engine at said speed, because it made no sense that I could be at 3k rpm and be stuck at 95 and not go farther. Thanks

If you get a re-flashed computer they can remove the speed limiter. I think JET still does it for these. These engines are pretty wheezy at high RPMs, the head design does not flow that well much above 4k or so. Mine will get to 100 before the governor kicks in but it takes quite a bit of time to get there.
