2001 XE 2.4L Automatic

Transmission slips for about 5-10 secs when I put it in drive while cold. Doesn't happen in reverse or 1st, just drive and 2nd.
Changed the transmission fluid and filter about 200 miles ago but it didn't seem to change anything.
No signs of metal shards or anything else to suggest serious damage in the pan/old filter.
Fluid level is fine.
Not sure if related or not but it shifts a little hard from 1st to 2nd, but it gets better after about 20 mins of driving.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

103,000 miles
only had it for a little over a month, but the guy who sold it to me had a tranny flush a few months ago. The fluid was pretty brown when I changed it though so I'll drain and fill it again when I get the chance.

If it was a seal wouldn't it still slip when I shift to 1st? Sorry don't know too much about the inner workings of transmissions, just really hoping it doesn't come down to that.
