I have a question for those who tow travel trailers. I am looking at getting a Viking 17BH for family camping up here in the mountains of Wyoming. The trailer has a GVWR of 3626. I know my towing capacity is around 6100lbs I don't plan own towing that much. Also a full water tank will be towed and that would weight about 278lbs. I did tow a 19 foot Jayco Jayflight with it this weekend and it felt like I had a bunch of parachutes behind me. But the little frontier got it done.

My truck is a 2016 SV V-6 4x4 and I know the towing capacity is around 6100lbs. Any help or thoughts on this well be greatly appreciated.

Unless you absolutely have to, don't fill your water tank until you get where you're going... or as close as possible.

I regularly pull a 25' WinnieMini Towable with zero issues. You'll be fine with that load.

Trailer brakes are a plus, as is a weight distribution hitch.

Lived in and traveled WY for years - had to search Thayne - had never heard of it. I bet it's really nice area!!

That amount of weight is no problem for Frontier, but you're going to feel it. Your Frontier weighs in about 4500 lbs. Don't worry about running that v-6 at higher RPMs - could run at 4k RPM all day. Turn off OD unless downhill cruising.

Make sure you follow the TOWING break in procedure, its different than engine break in and the rear differential will last longer for you.

Did you turn Over Drive off? Turning Over Drive off will lockout 5th gear, but the Torque Converter will still lock in 4th. Should make hwy towing much easier, and reduce shifting. Less Shifting, and the higher engine speed will keep the trans temps lower as well.

09eq Thayne is just south of Jackson Hole by about an hour.

im1kissfan Most of my camping is in National Forest or Wilderness area so I have to fill the water tank.

Abmobil the only time I used the OD was if I was on relatively level ground other than that it was of and once on the Forest Service roads I would switch to 3rd gear.

Thanks

What astounds me is the piss poor gas mileage I get pulling an UNLOADED 12' flat bed trailer...

A weight distribution hitch and trailer brakes would be a plus. If you are buying your camper from a dealer (especially if it's new), they may throw in those items as part of the deal and they install them. In my area, it's included as part of the purchase.

I've seen the back of my truck bottomed out loading a pallet of concrete on a Hudson trailer. It's full steel frame with wood floor, and the pallet weighed in at around 3400 pounds. At the end of the day it probably pulled 5500 to 6000 pounds, and I picked up four pallets total over four days. As far as mileage, I haven't refueled but I would guess I'm somewhere between 10 and 13 mpg right now. The only upgrades over stock I have is a set of Bilstein 5100s.

I pull our camper w/o h2o as far as possible. I run ride rite air bags to adj to my current load. OD is off, between the lift/tires/sliders its hunting gears more than I care for. Avg MPG about 13-15.

Mine goes down to 12-14 mpg with a loaded 6X10' flatbed trailer, with an empty trailer it's around 14-15 mpg...

The trailer weights in at 2850 bare bones. A full tank of water is 275lbs, LP tank I figure is about 40lbs and a battery is around 75lbs. That puts me at 390lbs of the 791 cargo capacity and leaves me 401lbs before I am maxed out at GVWR of 3626. If I can keep my gas mileage between 10-14 I am happy with that.

When and got the camp trailer today. Had the brake assist and weight distribution hitch installed and the Frontier pulled it like a champ. It's about 100 miles from Idaho Falls to Thayne Wy and used a half tank of gas. The hitch is a major plus with towing I don't I would try it without now. Never put the OD on the entire trip back and maintained about 60mph and never got about 3200rpms and that was going uphill. Thanks for the advice folks.

About to tow my brother's 6100 pound dive boat down to the keys for a month. As in tow it this Sunday. I am up to 3400 miles on my truck now so figured that break in period is done, I was not aware there is a towing break in period. For lack of time and the fact that I see nothing listed in the owners manual on this, does anyone have any suggestions? This is happening in 2 days.

I expect to get lower gas mileage of course, but not as bad as his 4 runner which goes down to about 3-4 mpg when towing this boat. We'll just use his truck to put it in the water as I don't want to be dipping my not even 3 month old truck into the ocean just yet. Luckily I have a shrock bumper with the built in tow receiver and I have manual transmission so don't need to worry about all the hassles of having an automatic when it comes to towing.

why? The truck is calibrated for running with two people and mimal cargo. Towing ANYTHING takes it way out of what it was designed for. Get a 3/4 ton Cummins and you'll STILL cut your fuel mileage in half.
Six year old thread, bud. Doubt anyone’s listenin.
