Timing chain question

10935 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  rdrfronty
My first question is do you need to replace the top chain guide? I ordered a kit and the guide that sits on-top between the 2 cams isnt in the kit. Dont wanna get it torn down and not have all the parts i need. Also, is it necessary to take the oilpans off if i can blow them out with compressed air? assuming the only reason that you take them off is because water from the water pump might leak in there. I am doing this on Sat so i wanna make sure i got everything together. thanks

Any updates to this? Did you pull the oil pans? How long did it take you start to finish?
I remember seeing your other thread but didn't put it together with this one. One more question, when you said you blocked off the upper oil pan so coolant didn't drain into it what did you do exactly? I am having a hard time picturing it.
After I posted last night, I searched around and found pictures of a VQ35 with the front case off. After looking at those, I could see how the coolant could get into the pan. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I have a 4x2 so hopefully it will be slightly easier then yours.

I have done timing belts and water pumps before, just never a motor with an internal water pump. Or one that seems like it is completely held together with RTV.

One more question, then I'll leave you alone, I promise. What did you do to get the crank pulley off? Impact gun, starter bump? Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.
