I was looking into the bike rack mount for the utilitrack system and noticed it requires a 2 piece cleat. The ones that came with my truck are one piece, so I can't use the nissan bike rack fork mount. No worries, I found a thread here with a 3 dollar solution, Superstrut's and my old fork mount which works perfectly. I am just curious if the cleats have been redesigned or if only the Titan gets 2 piece cleats or what? The 2 piece would be a lot more handy for fabbing various hauling solutions.

I have always seen the cleats as a 2 part design. I don't think they can make a single mount with the knob in the center.

Do you have any pics of your 1 piece cleats?

EDIT: Nevermind on the pics. I just looked on Ebay and it appears they did re-design the cleats. They did have to enlarge the area for the knob thou to make it work. Defiently seems like a cheaper solution thou.

Mine are 2 pieces, you have to take the "loop" part off of the tie down, they show a pic of one in that first link. I think it takes a torx bit though and I do not know the size.

Mine is for an 2008 model, and I have not seen the new ones, but couldn't fathom why they would change it though....

Sucks for me I guess, here are the cleats I received. I also received 2 small things that I have no idea what they are but I suppose they could be used in place of the lower half of the old cleat? Seems weird to me. I also got a tool for undoing the bolts on the small square pieces.

i've noticed this as well. not sure if they are redesigned or if the dealer can choose to order one type or another to save costs. at first, i thought the one piece was some type of cheap aftermarket clone, but was assured by a dealer that they were Nissan OEM parts. interestingly, if you look at them, they do not have Nissan on them anywhere. (the two piece cleats have it molded into the thumbwheel.) maybe Nissan offers both types?? i don't know.

the two piece are definitely more substantial in mass and design. you may be correct in them being for the Titan and the one piece being for the Frontier. i've not had a chance to look up or match part numbers or anything. maybe someone else will have a definitive answer.

because it's sturdier and you can attach stuff to the base only, i like the two piece design. how much advantage - if any, that offers in real life probably depends on the person.

and since mentioned, my observation is that the cleat and tie-down sets used to include four of the square stoppers. now, they are including only two. the stoppers can be used to hold things in place in the channels. they will not function the same was as the base only of the two piece.

my feeling is that any re-design was purely for cost savings.

The small squares go at the ends of the side rails to keep the cleats from going off the tracks ends.

Thats false since you just have to turn the cleats 90deg to remove them from the rails. You don't have to slide them in from the ends.
Actually that is their intended/advertised use. Just a really bad design fail.

It's a design fail that some have modified into a usefull tie-down.

That is a pretty bad design fail, lol. Score another one for Nissan I guess.
I was told by a tech that the small square ones are so you can "lock" the bed extender and divider into your bed so they can't be stolen. Thats why you need a wench to be able to tighten/untighten them. I can't speak for the divider, but it works for the extender.

I have the one piece ones too. I can assure you that they are plenty sturdy. Not sure what the 2-piece gains you except another possible place to fail (however highly unlikely).

After reading that it's to keep the extender or divider from being easily taken, I stand corrected.

The titan tie downs and the frontier tie downs (at least the 05-06 model years) were interchangeable. I hadn't seen the new designed one before.

The front fork bike mounts have been discontinued for the 2 piece cleats... What did you end up going with? I just got new bikes and I want to stand them up in my bed if I can.

That's where I have mine located... Living in baltimore they will take anything not bolted down. Reminder to lock your tail gates too.

The 2-piece and 1-piece cleats from Titans and Frontiers interchange. There was a design change around ~'09. Originally the 2-piece was there so they could be assambeld. Then they figured out that you could build them 1-piece. So less parts, less machining, and maybe slightly harder to put all the parts together. But still a simplier design. Just sucks for those why were taking the cleats apart to adapt them beyond what the cleat was designed to be.

When I make bolt down stuff for in the bed, I just use the little mystery squares that come in the box of cleats. The bolt is slightly deformed at the tip of the threads and often self destructs if you try to remove the bolt. This is to keep it from falling completely apart if it isn't tightened up. Easy fix, grind (or I use a flap disk sander) and take that last couple of threads off the bolt. Then you can get the bolt out cleanly. Now you have a something that you can add tabs or brackets to easy enough. Want to make it a little harder? change the bolts out for allen head bolts. Need a good bolt store tha carries metric cap screws.
