I am currently selling my 1998 Frontier, after its sold I will be in the market for a newer 1st gen... I want to have a crew cab/roof rack for sure... Supercharged would be nice, V6 is a must. Auto or 5 speed, any suggestions?

Do you prefer 1st gen? You can get a 2nd for about 14k. I owned a 98 pathfinder and hated the power. I would recomend a supercharger for sure. If you live in a metro area and have a long comute an auto would be wise. I wish we had a double clutch and paddle shifters. I drive my girls maxima and love that option. Look in overstock.com and it lists all the autos in that fit your criteria.

i would just get a n/a 3.3 and just get a intake/exhaust for more power. you could get a 2nd gen but here lately they seem to be having problems than the 1st gen. the power of the 2nd gen is top notch over the underpowered 1st gen but the 1st gen is more of a solid truck, no offense to the 2nd gen owners, i love them too.

i may be getting another first gen myself, nothing against the second i owned one for a week and three days and loved the hell outta it, but the first gen has a tighter turning radius, and is a little cheaper... ok so like quite a few thousand cheaper... but the superchargers don't really do much i mean yeah it gives them 30 hp... but in the world of s/c vehicles that is quite low... or am i wrong... this is just like one big @$$ long threadjack, i'm just rambling on bored as hell @ work... it's sllllloooowww!! so how is evry1 else doing 2 night??? 3.3's power isn't sooo bad though... i mean a little lacking... but not the worst of dogs... not the old dodge dakotas 2.8 v6... of course i'm going back before my own time with that one... but u get what i mean... do the 1st gen still have the same front diff problems the 2nd gens have???

1st gen SC is not worth the extra cost. You must run premium. The SC is known to have to be rebuilt and the Knock Sensor WILL go bad causing the ECM to cut power from the SC. If you are looking for SC get the codes pulled before purchase (this goes for non SC).

1st gen is underpowered and a bit slow and sucks gas. But it's got lots of torque so if you need it to haul you will not have an issue. Also, there are not a lot of after market parts.

Other 1st gen problem areas is the KS, 2000-2002 cracked exhaust manifold, gas tank rust, and that is about it for the major stuff.

The 1st gen is a pretty tough little truck. But double check then you buy it that the timing belt was changed at 100,000 miles because they have belts and not chains in the v6.

i have a first gen and my mom has a 2nd gen, and they are both really tough. the 2nd gen is def. faster more fuel efficient and prettier. the only problems weve had with either of them is a/c and we have beat the hell out of both of them.

Looks like I will probably rule out the supercharged, I do not want to have to rebuild a supercharger and relocate knock sensor... I am looking for something with more power than my 4cyl 4x4 98, and crew cab.

Remember that the all 1st gen v6 will have the KS fail. And they fail around 40,000 - 60,000. I've relocated mine, others jumper their out, and some have the dealer fix it.

KS will not throw KE light but the code can be read through a scanner.

the k/s doesnt really effect the n/a engines though. the 2nd gen is bigger and has A LOT more power, but for some reason the 1st gen (01-04 front end) look tougher. the 2nd gen however gets no better fuel milage than a titan, which has a monster of a v8.

Depending on your drive the auto or manual will be your call. I wish I had a manual now that my truck is a play truck but back when I bought it, it was not wise because of the driving I did. If you want power go second gen or don't settle for anything without a supercharger. Pricewise I couldn't find a 1st gen any cheaper than a new 2nd gen when I was looking because our trucks hold their value so well.

I don't know quite so much of the 2nd gen as I do the 1st gen, however, there are just a butt load of options on the 1st gen.

Are you looking for CC w/short bed or the long bed?
SE, LE, XE?
Limited Slip Diff?
4x4?
Leather?
Sun Roof?

All of these options you can find stock.

The hardest combination to find is LE only found in an 04 with standard 17 tires and (I believe) LSD in rear.

Good luck

also you can get an xe with 4wd and a v6, something they got rid of when the 2nd gen hit the lots. both are very very trucks, depends on what you want, how much room you need, and if you want big power.

If you log your fuel mileage, you will see a difference when the knock sensor goes out. mine went from upper 19s to lower 17s in a tank of fuel.
Ive by passed mine but it didn't go back to the same level. mid 19s now.

I would go with an 06+ The gen 1 is a good truck, the gen 2 is just a bit better.

i'd just skip out on the 2nd gen and get a full size with a v8. i am waiting on what nissan will do with the titan. rumors are they are coming out with a 2ns gen titan. the 2nd gen is a very nice truck but the fuel milage they get just doesn't impress me. my first gen, last i checked, got 18-19 mpg.

The titan is way out of my 10k price range first off, second that titan is not going to go half the places my 1998 can....

The perfect truck would be either a 2000 Frontier SE 4x4 Crew cab short bed 5 sp v6. Or a 2004 SE Supercharged v6 5sp 4x4, CC short bed.

Limited slip in both of them.... thats mainly what I am looking for, If I was to get a second gen I would want a king cab regular bed 4x4 6 speed...

Whats is better for offroading and durability..? 1st gen or 2nd? Also I have heard of a lot of problems with the e-lockers in the nismo... Should I stay away from a nismo?

Also here is a link to the listing for my 1998, Price is a little high, but i got some negotiating room haha... 1998 Nissan Frontier XE/SE 4x4 Low miles, Lift, Winch ETC

in my opinion the first gen is better off road. Its narrower, lighter, and actually has a 4x4 shifter instead of that twist knob bs.
