My son and I did the brakes on his 2008 CC SE a few weeks back. We disconnected the battery as per the manual. The job took about 6 hours total because I was teaching him to do it.

But, we were working in the evening since it's so hot out, and we ended up doing one wheel, then leaving it over night so we could finish the next day. All the while we left the battery off.

On the first start up after finishing the brakes and reconnecting the battery we noticed that there is a loud slow tapping sound from behind the passenger side dash that goes for about 15 - 30 seconds. It only happens when you start the car. Changing the air conditioner/heater settings doesn't seem to effect it. I.e., when the car is running, switching from upper vents to lower vents or defogger doesn't make the noise. Likewise, switching from hot to cold -- no noise.

The tapping sound is too loud and too slow to be a fan blade hitting a piece of debris stuck in the vents. It sounds like a piece of metal hitting a plastic box. Or perhaps a gear slipping. The tapping frequency is like once per second or every 3/4 of a second.

I don't know if the battery disconnect is a cause or not but I thought I should mention it.

Is there anything else under there that goes though some sort of movement cycle? Anything brake related that could be upset by us doing a bleed?

I'm open to any suggested troubleshooting tips on this. And I'm really hoping I don't need to pull the entire dash out :surprise:

Exact same thing happened to my 2005 LE Crew Cab. You can feel the vibrations when you put your hand on the passenger side dash. Unlike you, I had not done any work on the truck immediately before. Just regular daily usage. Then suddenly the loud noise started in the parking lot.

After a few weeks of occasional noise, it mysteriously went away and I haven't experienced it since. I never figured it out. That was nearly two years ago.

Sorry, I know that doesn't exactly help.
