Any of you run synthetic in your 1st gens? if so how often do you change your oil? I drive mostly city. I always used mobil 1 synthetic in my last vehicle and it always ran great.

:fantastic: Mobile 1!!! I am not a first gen but I change my oil at 7,500 at the latest. The oil still looks new when I dump it. Synthetic oil doesn't break down, it just gets dirty. BMW puts in Mobile 1 from the factory and recommends 15,000 mile oil changes if done with Mobile 1 even on their V8's.

I've been running Mobile 1 10W30 since I had 1000 miles in my truck. I change my oil every 5000 miles. I would probably wait until 10,000 miles but our trucks only take a little over 3 quarts and I don't drive a lot of miles in a year. I use a Mobil 1 filter also.

Mobile 1 5-30 and Mobile filter. Change it every 5,000 miles despite I drive all highway. When I switched to synthetic it pretty much solved my cold valve-train rattles.

did the same with my '94 hardbody. internal engine issues are one problem the thing never has had

i change my oil every 5000 km which is about 3100 miles. I use mobile 1 in all my vehicles with no problems. I don't recommend breaking a motor in with synthetic oil unless it was pre-broken in from factory with it.

It's interesting to see all the thumbs up for Mobil1...

Just curious - anyone out there have experience with Royal Purple, and if you do, how does it compare against Mobil1?
i used royal purple and didn't like it too much. i don'tknow if it was because the oil was a dark purple but after 4k miles that oil looked REALLY black and nasty. i now use amsoil and like it.

I use royal purple, and like dude ^ stated the oil comes out looking funky, but aside from that its fine. I have been considering switching to amsoil though.

FYI, capacity with filter is 3.75 quarts. Good to know since the dipsticks are so hard to read.

I run royal purple syncomax in the 5 speed in my car and like it. never tried the motor oil. I run redline synthetic in the 5 speed my truck and redline in my diffs. The redline is nice in cold weather, i'll find out how it is this summer. Next year i'll run royal purple in my truck.

I asked a guy at my local Advance Auto Parts about royal purple; he said the oil will change to brown (I guess the purple is just for looks). He also said that RP will "scrub" deposits left from previous oil - that might explain why your oil was "black and nasty." He spoke to a tech at the company, who recommended:

- the initial change to RP (oil and new filter)
- 3000 mile change (oil and new filter) because of previous oil deposits
- ANOTHER 3000 mile change (oil and new filter) to get the last of previous deposits

At this point, the tech recommended a filter change (and replacing oil lost from the filter change) at 4000 at 8000 miles, and a full oil/filter change at 12000 miles.

I think I'll give them a call tomorrow...

i changed from valvoline dino oil to RP and ever since i used RP its always been black and nasty at around 4k miles, i know its changed to brown after use but i didn't really like it. my engine has been clean as ever since i switched to amsoil, its expensive (including their oil filters) but my engine has been really clean due to visual inspections of the oil.

To OP:

Synthetic oil isn't worth it. It till cost about $50 more per oil change (or roughly $200-$300 per year) and will not give any noticeable increase in MPG or performance.

Get your oil change at your dealership and let them fill it. Mine fills it with Rottela that has an additive. This is all that is needed for the truck as far as oil. Anything else is just going to give you psychological gain and you fall for marketing.

a 5 quart jug of mobil 1 cost just over $20 at wal-mart. that leaves an extra 1.25 quarts for the next change
