I have an 06 Nismo and I have been hearing a strange noise lately.

When taking off from a stop ( Under moderate not WOT acceleration ) I experience a whirring or buzzing and slight vibration for the first 20 to 30 feet and it goes away and I cannot hear it again until I stop and take off again. Does anyone have any idea what this may be? I did get under the truck and noticed there is some "play" in the drive-shaft. After that I got under my Dad's Nismo and his drive-shaft is tight as can be. I visually checked the U-Joints and they looked fine to me.

Any ideas? Is there supposed to be some rotation of "play" in the driveshaft? Truck has 94,000 miles on it.

It could be timing chain. Rev up the rpms slowly in park or neutral and see if the sound is still there. If it is, then take it a step more and remove the serp belt and rev the motor again. If the sound is still there, then you know it is a motor internal. If the sound is gone, then you know it is an accessory issue.

94k miles its probably the timing chain guides. when it first starts it easiest to hear from a dead stop and as oil pressure comes down (tensioners put pressure on the chains based on oil pressure) the noise becomes softer and gets drowned out by all the other noises of the vehicle. a buzzing sound that as it progresses will sound more and more like a screw type supercharger. its generally pretty hard to hear with just revving of the engine in park until it progresses farther since revving in park gives very little oil pressure compared to acceleration under load.

My timing chain was louder as you drove, the condition is there so the sound does not go away.
If you open the hood and an increase the idle do you hear it? If you only hear it moving then it's something else.
Does it whine like a supercharger?

i had it on my z at about that mileage and it starts out only noticeable from a dead stop and gets worse as it goes. at first the sound isn't constant and goes away under my previous stated situations. it gets worse till it becomes pretty much constant

Does the sound/buzzing happen around the 2200 rpm range ??

Funny because I was noticing something like that recently.

It sounds more like whirling to me. And it "seems" that the truck does not accelerate with ease unless I mass the pedal harder than I think I should have to.
