i have had that happen 2 times in my truck. one time they hat to hot steam the evaporator out to clean some old old from driving in water.

last week i had it cleaned again but they sprayed some cleaner on the ac air inlet on top of the hood and ran the ac on high for about 30 min.

Running your ac with circulate function off helps prevent it.

I turn my AC off a few blocks before I arrive at my destination to dry it out. Make sure the drain at the bottom of the evaporator case isn't plugged with crud. You can buy spray insecticide/deodorizer to kill the mold that is growing and causing the stink inside the plenum.
High humidity climates and evaporator freezeups add to the problem.

yes, all that stated above. I will have the misses run the outside air from now on, unless a stinky diesel bus is ahead, lol...

after i posted I watched a few youtube vids on how to get rid of the stink, seems only temporary though.

has to be better than what`s coming out.

Shiba Inu`s are in the truck a lot of the time and they don`t stink, in fact they will hide behind the front seats so not to smell the funk...lol.

My 2016 is only a month or so old, it stinks if you leave it on recirculate all the time. I usually run it on outside air but when it is 100 in the cab when you start it I think the AC on auto function switches it to recirc to cool faster. Mine doesn't smell like wet dog though, just like an overdose of new car smell. I assume from the new plastics a,d rubber in the cab?

Yea, my 2015 is starting to experience this. I noticed the recirc. has been on, probably nearly full time, since I don't really pay attention.

Smells like a damp rag that's been sitting around for days.

I will try blasting hot air.

I had the fan on high one summer day and heard a bunch of debris suddenly hit the fan . . . a few days later it stunk so bad . . . they had to disassemble the dash to get the mouse nest and bodies out. That shop still remembers me as the guy with the mouse nest in the vent. Now that really stinks!

Recirculate is to cool down a hot vehicle then you switch to outside air. If you read the manual it states not to run it in that position for extended periods of time.
In winter people drive around with fogged windows and wonder why, it's from all their humid breathing.

Put Heat/AC the system on fresh. Spray some Lysol into Heat/AC fresh air intake below windshield. Now put system in recirc for a few minutes. Repeat if necessary. This was the routine for my 5yrs at the Toyota dealer. This combined with a clean filter will remedy most funks.

Yep, I got the 'funk' smell a little while after I got my 2013. I always kept the AC in recirc mode in all of my other vehicles. I even kept the AC in recirc mode on my '06 Frontier & didn't ever have a problem with it. Not the same in the newer Frontiers. I went & bought some stuff called Oznium that's supposed to work really well for getting nasty smells out of AC systems. And, yes, it worked for awhile then the 'funk' always came back.

So, I did just what Clint had mentioned to do, I went back to the owners manual & read through it again. Sure enough, there it was plain as day. It states to run the AC in 'auto' or in 'fresh' mode, & to only run it in 'recirc' mode for short periods of time. After I put the AC in 'auto' & let it do its thing for awhile, I haven't had a problem since. That was over 2 years ago. :))
