Has anyone ever relocated their stereo? I have lost the last stereo I am going to lose and I just bought a new simple Kenwood. Chances of this stereo getting jacked are slim but people steal anything around here. Both glove-boxes are too small to even put it at an angle. The storage compartment of the center console is too hard to see. Any suggestions? Maybe I am just being a little too paranoid but I am sick of it. The truck does have an alarm now and I am about to just wire it up to where it will burst in flames if the door is opened with the alarm set. My next thought was the storage under the A/C controls. If I put it there and leave the big trashy hole up top it will look like it doesn't have a stereo.

buy a radio with a removable face ( pretty much standard on all radios now a days) just remember to remove the face when you turn your truck off and take it with you.

just arm your car with one of the alarm systems that shoots flames out from under the sides of the car when someone breaks in.... after a burglar bbq I'm sure word would get around not to mess with your truck....
but on a serious note have you thought about making a flip down cover that looks like part of the dash? my friend has a scion and it has a glovebox-like door that closes over the radio face. when it's closed, it just looks like the dash and has a logo on it. just throwing that out there.

Someone made this cheap solution for their Xterra. Obviously, it isnt flawless, but would sure look better than a huge gap in your dash from a relocated stereo!!

Now that's fancy ******* engineering! a notebook!? would have never thought of that! looks nice though, and if you had a remote for your radio you could leave the cover down, and just put the remote in the center console! Nice!:fantastic:

Haha, it is what it is. I havent done it on my truck - since my stereo is stock. But it seems like an easy enough way to hide what you've got...

I'm just impressed with the way it turned out! haha, when someone says 'just cut up a notebook from the dollar store' you would expect to see something much worse looking... He obviously spent some time on it. impressive none the less. I engineered a computer power supply to run a 12V source for a car stereo in the house so I could test it (my old head unit died). Got it to power on, but the radio was already shot... but now I have that power supply setup as a 12V workstation :-D I tested a car audio amp on it to make sure it powered on the other day... may use it to make a jukebox using a car stereo.... hm...

X2 I bought a stock stereo from someone on here and it was brand new. It work flawlessly for 6 months but just went to crap. The stock stereos are junk so I just maned up and bought another aftermarket stereo. The cd got stuck, then the motor went out, and after I punched it would only play one station, a station I hate so I pulled it out of the dash and tossed it out the window.

I really like that guy's idea with the plastic folder and as much as I have not been crazy about carbon fiber, his looks good. I also have scratches and an aux port I need to cover up so I am considering this. I also don't want to give someone the idea that something good may be under it so I may try to find another face to place over it and just put it in the stock location.

Thanks for the ideas and help so far.

you could use the folder idea, and use gorilla glue to hold the stock faceplate and lcd with buttons onto the folder.... just another thought... since you have a dead unit on your hands I'm sure de-facing it isn't an issue ;)

I ended up putting it in the pocket below the A/C controls. I don't like it all that much but it works and is hard to see. I also said screw it and am leaving the hole from the stock stereo. If you don't park in a garage every night you can't keep nice crap so screw it. It pisses me off to remember how nice the interior use to be.
