I've got a belt or pulley squeaking under my hood but I'm not sure how to identify what it is. I don't know when or if the serpentine belt has been replaced, it looks fine though. It quits squealing if I accelerate so it is only doing it when there is no load on the engine. It doesn't seem to quit even after the truck is warm either. Tensioner maybe? Timing belt? I am at 110,000 miles and I do not know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. Is there anyway to tell without actually getting in there? It is an 01 S/C.

A mechanic's stethoscope will help you track it down. Without a good service history, you're probably out of luck knowing what's been done on the truck. I think the maintenence interval is somewhere around your mileage for the timing belt, so it having been done by the former owner(s) is pretty unlikely.

I was in the same situation, not knowing about the timing belt on the truck I just bought. Look in the glove box for any information left by the previous owners. I got lucky and found the receipt for the timing belt.:fantastic: I could sleep again after that. Also based on what I have read on here from other members, I would find out about the timing belt ASAP. Otherwise if the belt breaks, it could completely screw your motor.

I think its the belt tensioner, I've have a similar sound in mine come up lately. If it was a timing belt issue it'd likely sound like your engine is "supercharged"

Kinda weird, but since the cold snap/winter storm down in the states i've noticed a TON of you guys have started noticing weird sounds

Hey man, just wondering, does it make the noise more often when you turn at slow speeds, like just leave the truck in neutral and turn your steering wheel and see if that makes it do it more... Mine was doing that two days ago..I tightend the tensioner about 3-4 turns..it was too loose but now the noise is gone...as far as the timing belt goes, dont put it off.. I was in iraq this year, let my folks drive my truck, told them to replace the timing belt asap, they didnt, it broke, i lost 700 bucks....in labor and for a new timing belt.. I got very lucky that it didnt mess up my heads and none of my rods were bent, but even still it cost me that much so I dont wanna imagine how much it would be if it did mess em up.. Just my 2 cents... If u need a picture of where the tensioner bolt is i can go take one for you tomorrow. leme kno

Not sure, I'll check this tomorrow, and try to tighten the tensioner if need be. Thanks for the info. I guess I should change the timing belt soon. I remember reading in one of the threads (don't remember which one) where you can buy the kit to change the belt, water pump, ect.....anyone have a link to a good site to get that from? Guess I'll just bite the bullet and do that soon.
