I have a squeaking/chirping/rubbing noise under the hood with engine idling. Sounds like a bad bearing to me. 88,000 miles on my 2013. Pinpointed to the serpentine belt area. Left hand side looking at engine with hood popped. It seems to be either the power steering pump bearing, alternator bearing, or auto belt tensioner. Sound does increase in rpm when giving it the gas. Called dealer and doubts very seriously that it's the power steering pump bearing. And he doubts it's the alternator. He tends to believe it's more likely the auto belt tensioner. I haven't really seen this problem on this forum. Any thoughts? To me it sure sounds like it's coming from the power steering pump bearing though.

Jkon - I don't know your level of mechanical aptitude. But if mine, here's what I would do:

Draw a good diagram of your serpentine belt; there may be a sticker showing this when you open the hood (on our 2005 GMC Yukon there are 4 diagrams for different set-ups, so 3 of those are not correct for me).

Then release the serpentine belt tensioner, typically a 1/2 inch breaker bar or a breaker bar socket is used for this, there is nothing to unscrew, the tensioner arm rotates. While holding that released, remove the serpentine belt. Then spin all the stuff by hand: the tensioner pulley, the idler pulley, the power steering pulley, the AC clutch pulley, the alternator, etc. Feel and listen for anything approaching wear or resistance. The power steering pulley will have some resistance, same with alternator pulley. Replace any that are bad, typically idler pulley and tensioner come as assemblies, not like older ones where just the bearing gets replaced (because time is money to mechanics).

At 88K miles, might be good idea to get good-quality replacement serpentine belt and keep the current one as an emergency on-road back up.

While we're on this topic, my hood squeaks on my '06 depending on the road surface. No matter how I adjust the rubber bumpers or what lubricant I use on the hinges, latch or rubber bumpers, the squeak returns in a few weeks. (I have the Nissan Hood Protector on mine, which slightly closes up the hood clearance if that is a clue.) Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, and I tried all the things you did too. Ended being the rubber stops; I put a piece of velcro under each stop and that fixed it. No more squeak (at least not from the rubber stops).

I did this and the wiggle is apparently so pronounced the velcro tabs adhesive slid under it.

Excellent idea -- I'll try it! Nothing to lose.
