I'm talkin' to my brother yesterday, who tells me he just purchased an 09 Maxima. He loves the car, and all and goes on to explain to me about this wierd transmission in it .. CVT .. that shifts or doesnt shift in some sort of way.
Anywho .. he goes onto explain that he just recieved a letter in the mail, extending his warrenty due to complaints brought up by owners who have had problems with these units.

Nissan CVT Warranty Extension

So I'm sitting there thinking to myself after my phone call ...
Hey .. Whats up with Nissan not covering the timing chain issue in our trucks, like they would do with the CVT transmissions ..

I mean really nissan ... whats good for the goose should be good for the gander ...

Actually, there have been very few issues with the Maxima CVT. The Murano was the first vehicle to implement the CVT, and now that some of those are 5-6 years old, ther have been a FEW issues. Considering that the CVT is now in the Max, Altima, Murano, Versa and Sentra - it's not really surprising to see that Nissan acted quickly to show that they want people to have confidence in the product.

FWIW, I think the timing chain issue is way over stated on this forum, which is the nature of forums. MSN autos reliability ratings show "occasional" timing chain problems for 05 Frontiers, and "infrequent" problems for 06 and 07 Frontiers.

From my understanding the following vehicles have TSBs on this issue:

2004-2007 Maxima (A34)
2004-2007 Quest (V42)
2004-2006 Altima (L31) VQ35 engine
2005-2007 Pathfinder (R51)
2005-2007 Xterra (N50)
2005-2007 Frontier (D40) VQ40 engine

so, I think its a little bigger that just "overstated forum buzz" ..

TSB's can be issued for a problem on an amazingly small number of vehicles. That's why they wait for an affected customer to complain. If the issue is more widespread a recall willbe used, especially if it's a safety issue.

Regardless, we all know if it affects your vehicle - it is a big deal.

Stop and think about it though. If you sell 100,000 maximas and 1,000 frontiers, who is going to get helped first?
I dunno. When I bought my Frontier in May the dealer said Maxima's were barely selling due to the high price so it seems more Frontiers get sold than Maxima's.

This is suprising as I dont know about others but I think the new Max is pretty sweet looking. I was reading about it and there were some really proud owners out there with nothing but compliments. Maybe its another one of those hidden jewels as Nissan doesnt advertise for sh*t on those either.

I wouldnt complain if there was one parked in my driveway...

A very good friend of mine is a service manager at a nissan dealership in mass - he has done very few timing chains... the problem exists... But not common. People who are on this forum probably represent less then 1% of total owners of 05-09's...

From nissannews.com:

Nissan vehicles posted sales of 50,644 units in November compared with 38,974 units sold in November 2008, a 29.9 percent increase.
Nissan Division car sales were up by 41.6 percent year over year, and truck sales rose 11.7 percent in November 2009 compared with the same month last year.
Vehicles showing significant sales increases included Maxima (up 83.8 percent), Altima (up 43.1 percent), Frontier (up 71.4 percent) and Xterra (up 50.9 percent).

Just for clarification, are you making the above comment about CVT transmissions or timing chains?

You are taking the results from your dealer in your area. Did the dealer specifically mention that the dealership is tracking identically with national sales?

I am sure there are dealerships in the country that have higher Z sales than maxima sales, higher titan sales than z sales, and so on.

I know a girl here in my town who's had a murano since a few weeks nissan released the m murano, it has the CVT.. I remember driving it when it was brand new.. I drove it again two years ago when we went out on the desert, yes... she took the murano to the desert..then it was at 120K miles and it ran fabulous with lots a power, very smooth, love that CVT.

Now she has a new one and I still see that murano driving around with a different owner to this day and seems to run great.

I know quite a few Altima owners and none has a bad thing to say about the CVT units.

My guess is timing chains as the Frontier does not come with a CVT
All someone needs to do is get the right person from Nissan in contact and talk some sense into them. We all have valid reasons to be covered free of charge.

Well a timing chain may be cheap but i cant imagine the labour is cheap being the fact that the engine is a DOHC.

i was wondering when another company would start having cvt issues. as a former saturn tech, we have been dealing with the cvt crap for a long time. saturns cvt was introduced in 2002 (i think) and has been nothing but crap since day one. the trans is $6k without labor and we were doing them none stop, atleast 3 a week and thats with a 5 man shop. there are some saturn VUES out there that have had more than 4 trans units put in. do the math thats 24000 just in parts not including labor. cust didnt care because GM had issued a new warranty on the trans that covered everything 100% up to 100000 and then different % at higher miles. when gov. restructured gm this was one of the first things to go and now the cust are responsible for it all.

well keep wondering, lol. nissan is not having problems with CVT. the warranty was extended on them to show confidence to the public that this "new" (also out for years) type of transmission is nothing to be afraid of. I'll repeat that, the warranty was extended due to lack of issues.

saturn, on the other hand.... gm dumped saturn..... wonder why. domestic marketing only lasts so long.

as for the timing chain issue in the VQ, seriously, we have is way overblown, it isn't some crazy problem causing vehicles to stop working. it develops a whine noise. no car manufacturer is going to issue a recall for that. yes, it sucks that some of them don't fail until after the warranty period but you act like it was designed that way!
not even all NNA employees have HEARD of the chain whine it is just not that popular.

everybody needs to calm down and cross your bridges when you get to them. you will lead a very neurotic life if you worry about something that probably won't even happen tomorrow, today. furthermore, why let someone else's frustration bleed into your own life? help them if you can but don't let the problems of the people bring you down. you have your own to deal with today.
