Traded in my 09' last week on a 1999 4runner. Wanted to get out of debt and I always wanted a 3rd gen 4runner.

Got a good trade in. Bought my Frontier new in May of 09' for $22,200 (after negotiations and rebates) and they gave me $22,500 for trade in almost a year later. Of course I paid more for the 4runner, a little under retail book but it is par for the course with Toyota's especially the older ones.

Anyway long story short I walked away with a 1 owner 4runner with 163k (ouch!), but kept my Duratrac's and it has a lot of options like moonroof, power everything, v6, auto, 4wheel drive of course (with a real 4wd shifter vs a switch which seems to be in every new rig these days) and best of all the push button rear locker. And they cut me a check for $561 to make up the difference, how often does that happen...

I did like the Frontier, but I never really loved it. I already miss the power, but what can I do.

Well, this was a great site with tons of good info. I will probably drop by from time to time to see whats going on.

Laters!

hope your 11 year old "new" car doesn't break down on you, then you are right back where you started with the money problems, but at least you got a great deal on trade in

well, good luck with your 'new' ride. If there is only $561 difference from trade-in then how is that helping with debt? I assume there is still a loan for the etinre amount - $561?

Anyways, I appreciated your input here on the forum. Good luck

That's kinda a lot for a '99 4runner with that many miles, IMO. I like 3rd gen runners, though. My dad has an '01 and I love that thing. I have been trying to talk him into selling it to me, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

My dad's has 170k on it and has had to go into the shop probably five times in the past four years. All were for minor problems and were not even affecting the safety or performance of it. I wouldn't expect a break down unless it hasn't been taken care of by the previous owner.

Maybe the $561 is the check to him after the debt is paid.....

So maybe he went from a new truck with a payment to an older 4runner with no payment and $561 in his pocket.

If that is the case, then congrats on no more car payment

Way to go man, .. dept free feels good and I love those 4runners, my buddy colton had an 00 TRD supercharged limited model with all the bells and whistles, locker, etc.. oooh man i loved it. We use to take his 4runner and my rodeo out all the time, i'd say they did equally well out climbin on the rocks.. yes, a truck's a truck and and suv is an suv... that's why i've kept the rodeo in the mean time :)

These SUV's with shorter wheel bases do better trailin' than the stock frontier does anyways if that's what you're into, Tight places that I have to have the locker engaged in my truck are sometimes effortlessly passable in my rodeo in 2wd.. I'm gonna need to put a bit of money into my frontier to get it to perform like the rodeo does... although it'll never be the same, that rodeo just goes goes goes nice and easy and is a BLAST on the streets, damn fun.. the 4runner feels just like the rodeo, handles very similarly and trails almost identically, my rodeo's got the dana44 stock, unsure about the 4runner... i've gave that thing hell for 123k miles so far, probably mostly offroad, and it's damn perfect still, ill give ya a high five. My buddy's 4runner went through just as much hell, he followed me on all our crazy trailin ventures. . . never had a problem, at all. :goodjob:

Yea, no April fools joke as its true.

The above it correct. I got $22,500 for trade in - $200 to swap tires over = $22,300 - $12,700 still owed = $9600 - $8887 for the 4runner = $713 - DMV fees = $561 check to me.

Retail book on it was around $9100. Another 4runner I was looking at was selling for $1k above book with no negotiations. That dealer was going to give me $20k for my truck. Scoring great deals on Toyota's isnt easy, especially when you have a trade.

With 163k on the clock I was hesitant, but figured I would take a look at it to compare to others I saw. If the odometer didnt say the mileage, you would think it had under 100k. No seat wear, rips, or cracks. Clean carpets, etc.. All vin stickers match and I have been unable to find any tape lines or overspray so it appears its never been painted. Timing belt was done at 95k, new battery, starter and power antenna installed by dealer.

After having it for a few days and a few hundred miles I discovered that the CD charger doesnt work and sometimes it can be difficult to start when warm, called dealer and they said to bring it to service and they would take care of it.

The older yota's are notorious for rusting, but this is a local Oregon truck so its not an issue.

If I can squeeze 50k out of this truck I will be happy as it would take me at least 6 years to do that. I know some issues will arise and money will need to be spent, but I can squirrel away what I was paying for payments and interest to cover that.

Anyway, Trading in was in no way bagging on the Frontier's as they are still bad *** trucks and I would rather have one than the 2nd gen taco's. However I like the simplicity of older vehicles and the fact that I am debt free aside from my mortgage is a nice feeling :)
