So basically I'm cheap and I had a 3" K&N filter kicking around. I paid about 60 bucks for it a couple years ago. I thought maybe I could reuse it with new Fronty rather than dishing out 300 for a proper aftermarket intake. I got some 3" aluminum tubing from a buddy, a 3.5" hose clamp, and pulled the factory airbox. I cut a rectangular hole to put the sensor into, drilled two holes with some self tapping screws, and voila. This is what I came up with. Literally in no more than 15 minutes. Wanted to see what you guys think. I'm going to clean it up and paint it black to keep a stock appearance. I have the factory lower airbox half there to protect it. Work in project, but for 15 minutes of my time, it sounds [email protected]!

Suggestions for improvement?
Problems I may face in the future?
Criticism welcome.

Well one thing comes to mind. I had a KN CAI on my 2006 and the "box" that the filter was in was sealed off from the engine compartment. Your set up isn't sealed, well that's what it looks like from the pictures, therefor your allowing the hot air to enter intake, which defeats the Cold Air Intake. The idea is to get colder air and more of it, which will make more power.

Kind of hard to write what I'm trying to explain, but maybe someone else will chime in too.

Good luck...

No I understand what you're saying. I only did this to increase airflow over the stock box. I agree its definitely no cooler, if anything even a bit warmer. I was thinking of trying to route some form of ducting from the front of the vehicle. But I honestly couldn't find an easy way to route the air. Even from what i've read on the Volant CAI, i know it goes down near the factory horn, however there is the shroud to the rad that looks like it blocks 95% of any cool airflow. A work in progress I admit. But I would say that throttle response has improved and that it sounds good. I'm going to drive it around for a bit and see if it increases the gas mileage.

As a work in progress, it is well.

I would build some kind of shield to help isolate it from the motor to make it more of a CAI. Also, the volant set-up uses a horn that goes from the box to the radiator shroud area. This works because the shroud is removed on like step 4 or something like that.

The one thing that I am worried about is that you have to make sure you have a good seal between the tube and the MAF. If not, you will get some wacked out readings.

i love how the stock box is. its sealed. if you can close the top over it your intake temps will drastically reduce.

another thing is your tube, the way air flows is like a toilet, with the ribs still there it doesnt do the flowing so well. that is not really as big of thing as the closed box.

but if you could get the box closed your intake temps will be great and the amount you intake will be great.

Good start! might come out o.k..

Suggestion: Fandangle some kinda bracket for it, the tube/filter might come apart on a landing or rough road.
