I received my Shrockworks Diff cover last week and after a long week at work, I decided to throw it on last night. I knew going into the job it was going to leak, so I decided I would replace the fluid as well. It never hurts to throw some fresh Amsoil in there.

First impressions: solid construction and looks to do exactly what I wanted. I threw a few coats of black rustoleum, then a few of clear on it. I screwed the paint up, but it's going to get bashed on rocks and repainted frequently, so I don't really care. I went with black because I'm not really into flashy mods, or doing stuff for looks. I'm a "function over fashion" kind of person.

So I removed the old cover, drained the milk shake out of my diff (diff breather mod was completed two nights ago), and scraped all the old RTV off. I used a razor blade, some alcohol and a scowering pad.

Diff cover with RTV:

Diff cover cleaned up, notice the dimples around the perimeter? That's what you want to see after cleaning.

I installed a Mag Hytech Lube Locker instead of RTV. The gasket wasn't cheap, but I hate RTV, it never seems to set right for me. (and I hate waiting 24 hours to fill the diff)

First step anyone should make with this diff cover, take the bag of hardware from Shrockworks and insert in trash. BUY GRADE 8 BOLTS. I can't stress this enough. I read the reviews of guys snapping them, but I figured "hey, I'm gentle with parts". Nope, I snugged everything down, then torqued to 10 ft lbs, then 20, then 24, SNAP. OE torque spec is 31 ft lbs (seems high for diff bolts, but I'm not an engineer. I bought a set of 7 (you need 8 ) from O'Reilly's for $4.32.

After I got the grade 8 bolts, I torqued everything to 26 ft lbs and filled it with Amsoil. I went out and beat on it briefly and everything seems great. That gasket is awesome and worth the cost over RTV.

Time will ultimately tell if the Lube Locker works well and if this cover is worth it, but I have high hopes.

Looks great! I always seem to screw up paint jobs as well ::grin:: Other than that, your diff cover looks like an armored turtle shell. :)

It does indeed! I ordered some Hefty aluminum skids, I'm just going to clear coat those so I don't screw up the paint again ::grin::.
