Trying to decide if I should sell off my canopy and go for something more flexible. Not digging the extra weight and visibility penalty. almost side swiped a BMW yesterday on the freeway (not that that's a bad thing he he)

I'd love to get a Softopper (I think) that I could just install when I need it. seems like the most versatile solution, but am not about to pay $750 for one, unless maybe I can sell the canopy for $800.
Part of me wants to hold onto it since it is a really nice Leer (i talked the dealership into pulling it off of a used dark gray fronty on the lot) but the bed is empty 99% of the time. I don't have a good place to store it that would be protected from the endless rain here. I thought about a tri-fold tonneau cover but those are useless when you need to haul something big - I need good rain protection.

Not sure how much I should ask for the canopy. I can't find a single Frontier canopy for sale on craigslist in my area. i know the nicer ones like this usually ask for over $500 used, and new aren't they something crazy like a couple grand or more?

Do you have a garage?
I take my topper/canopy off every fall and hang it from the roof of my garage (I can still park in my garage by pulling in backwards) , I then put it back on in the spring.

I have a garage but i'm not keen on the idea of having to figure out hanging it up, but i actually have like a 12 foot ceiling on half of it so that might be an idea. if the canopy had rails/rack on top (it doesn't) it would be super easy to hang up... i bought a used canopy for my last truck and someone had installed some DIY rack on the roof, wasn't a bad idea but they bolted it down right in the middle and the whole roof sagged big time. I wonder how possible it would be to carefully install a couple rails onto one of these properly on the edges...

In Hawaii, brand new fiberglass camper is around $3300+

Yikes. I'd be super happy if i could get a grand for mine, it's in super good shape, all glass is there, all windows open, screens are even in place. All it needs is a tiny bit of touch up black paint around the latch (on my to-do list), and keys, which should be like $5 at the locksmith, i planned to pick some up anyway...

I paid about $1,800 for mine new. I do get tired of it at times, most due to visibility problems it causes. I would probably list it for $1,000 if I decided to sell it. I wish I had a garage and a way to hoist it.

If my ARE TW topper (~$1800 new) had NO side windows, I know that would really get to me.
Had read too many times that, "when it's on you'll want it off, when it's off you'll want it on." Not true here. Am glad it's there and only very rarely (almost never) do I wish it was off.

Those side-windowless canvas ones have a semi-clear (roll-up?) vinyl back window, right? THAT would bug me. Guessing it would not age well as far as clarity.
YMMV

since the canopy windows are tinted, and the rear truck windows are tinted, it's hard to see anything through both of them, especially in this dark dreary raining weather here all the time. I pretty much don't even bother to look, i just check the mirrors and merge slowly, so the lack of windows on the canvas one probably wouldn't bother me anyway but it's hard to say.
I'm wondering how long a canvas one would last too, but i'd only have it on when i need it, which wuldn't be very often. I'd probably go for the gray instead of black to fade. i just cant bring myself to pay over $700 for a canvas cover.
If i can figure out how to hoist the canopy up i think that might be the winner solution - if i can remove and install it fairly easily alone then i have no reason to get rid of it. just not sure on how to make that happen. i might try to attach rails to the roof of it.
might also post a WTB for a Softopper and see if I have any luck, I've seen them go before for around $350.

i think i may have founda solution .... this would probably be pretty easy to build.

I do not really dislike mine and probably will not try to sell it. With that said though I would not have spent $1,800 on it if I had it to do over. I had a trifold tonneau cover on it before and I would have just stayed with that.....

With my CC LWB I can't see anything between the C-pillar and the rear-seat headrest. I drove a cargo van at work that had no side windows at all but because it had a really tight turning radius and well designed mirrors it was fairly easy to turn the van and move just a little to see what I needed to see.

I want those towing mirrors, but it chafes that they charge more for the ones lacking heaters than for the heated ones.

Paid $350 for mine used. I considered that to be a bargain. Thinking $750+ would have been a good price. I painted it myself for about $50 worth of single stage matched white..

Check with Leer if your particular topper model can handle roof rails - believe some models are stronger than others. I recently had rails factory installed on an ARE for my Titan.

Look for a placard near the rear door, possibly mounted on the 'ceiling'...or somewhere on the interior surface.

just spotted these on amazon:

seems pretty good for the price, my only concern is they are close to 9 inches high, i have to park in a parking garage... need to measure before ordering these... anyone know of any low-pro universal racks?

Given how many model years of this truck have been built, you may want to consider if a factory roof rack would bolt to the shell. I'm sort of thinking about the '05-'12 Pathfinder roof rack myself, I see enough of those trucks on CL when I'm looking at auto parts that it's made me wonder what would fit exactly.

I don't care too much about whatever rack i end up with looks like but that would definitely look nicer than these universals and probably sit half as low... I'm skeptical that I would beat $70 shipped to my door though, plus the time, gas and effort of trying to find something in a junkyard that MIGHT work... it would be nice to know if it's an option though. I saw an old thread where a guy made canopy racks that matched the pro4x ones, looked super cool.
